Come nightfall on Saturdays, Merdeka Square is a veritable fairyland, thanks to the Sultan Abdul Samad building nearby on Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin. Designed by British architects at the end of the 19th century, the most photographed building in Malaysia was among the earliest buildings in Kuala Lumpur to bear the Moorish influence. Its arresting features are the forty-foot clock tower and the curved colonnades crowned with copper cupolas. It still retains its original purpose which is to serve the people of Kuala Lumpur; an administrative building in the 1900-s, this majestic building is today, the High Court of Kuala Lumpur. I heard Sultan Abdul Salad building is a law court now. As it is a beautiful building, Victorian-Moorish architecture, made by bricks, I went around it. I came across lots of policemen on the backside of the building. All of them wore the uniform. I asked the way to the MasjidJamek to one of them. He was very kind.

My favourite architecture in KL. This is a MUST-SEE ... more than (well, at least comparable to) the Petronas towers. One recommendation of mine is to visit it at night when it looks absolutely stunning decorated in lights (see picture.) The gleaming copper domes and 130-meter clock tower of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building are by far the most impressive architectural feature of the Dataran Merdeka. This elaborate edifice is a fantastic blend of Moghul, Moorish, Arab, and British neoclassical architecture, a style far more expressive of the British colonial imagination than of Malay culture. Designed by architects Norman and Bidwell, the building took more than two years to build and was completed in 1897. It served initially as the center of British colonial administration in Malaysia. Today, it houses the Judicial Department on one end and Infokraf, a centre for Malaysian handicrafts, on the other.

Sultan Abdul Amad Building blend of Victorian and Moorish architecture is typical of the colonial buildings that give the city much of its character. It was designed by AC Norman (an associate of AB Hubbard, designer of the Kuall Lumpur train station) and built between 1894 and 1897. It was once the Secretariat Building for the British administration and is now Malaysia's Supreme Court.

Sultan Abdul Samad Building with its 40m clock tower dubbed as Malaysia's Big Ben is a favorite KL landmark. Moorish in design, this impressive architecture, was formerly the seat of the British colonial government and now houses the Malaysia Supreme and High Courts. At night, the whole building is lit up with bright yellow lights up and around every wall. My Visit: We visited Sultan Abdul Samad Building during a weekend. The road was closed due to an ongoing display of classic cars. We were not able to take pics with a nice panoramic view of the building however we got pics of cars from an old jeepney style to the new generation racing cars... quite lovely huh...

Sultan Abdul Samad Building: You gotta see the 'twirls'
Sultan Abdul Samad building really is a wonderful building to look at, especially at night time. It kind of looks futuristic yet it has that 'old building charm'. It is especially surprising when you first see it because the appearance of the building was just so different to lots of other things that you see in KL. The whole area just had a different 'feel'. Today, it houses the Supreme Court and High Court.
