Budget Airlines

Budget airlines have flourished from the opening of the Kuala Lumpur (KL) -Singapore air route. This means that these cheap flight have forced bus companies, who operate express buses between these two cities, to reduce their cost.

I would not have travelled to KL by air if not for cheap airfare (I paid approximately S$90 per pax return on Tiger Airways). Two other budget airlines - Air Asia and Jetstar Asia - also fly to KL.

Other than the two hours waiting time, it'll take you only 45 minutes to fly between the two cities.

An Asian budget airline is Air Asia.
On certain routes,
they have some amazing prices.
Such as, from KL to Laos.

The earlier you book,
the better chance you have
to get a cheaper rate.

This is a no frills airline,
so don’t expect any blankets,
or good food,
if good food exists on any airline.

If you’re a particular healthy eater,
forget bringing your own food on board.
It is simply not allowed.
So make sure the tummy is full before hand,
or wait it out till you arrive to your destination.

Rates are also cheaper by booking on line,
rather than going directly to their office.

They do warn at check in,
not to place any valuable inside of your suitcase,
which is why I have repeatedly advised,
no matter what, put a lock on your bag.

Lost baggage does and has occurred
on some of their flights.

And I have heard through others of several complaints,
but that comes with the budget price
along with the high traffic
of flying around the world.

Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT)

Kuala Lumpur's new Low Cost Carrier Terminal

The LCCT is specifically built at KL International Airport to cater to the growing passengers of the Low Cost Airlines especially the passengers of Malaysia's first `no frills' airline, Air Asia. It is located 20km away from the KLIA Main Terminal Building (MTB).

The 35,290 square metres terminal is designed to suit the Low Cost Carrier business model that requires basic terminal facilites and amenities. With this in mind, the terminal is designed to facilitate the passengers' movement of internal and domestic departures / arrivals within a single floor operation area.

Shuttle services are available to transfer passengers between the LCCT and the MTB, vice versa.

The LCCT is has common facilities and amenities for the convenience of the passengers and users of the terminal. Retail and F&B outlets are located at the Public Concourse and at Departure and Arrival Halls for both International and Domestic areas. Duty Free shops are available at the International Arrival & Departure Lounges.

Recent addition to the LCCT is the check-in kiosk. You can check-in yourself at these terminals by keying in your name and ticket confirmation number. Just a snap and you will get your boarding pass printed out. For domestic flight, there's even web check-in. It's really more convenient and easier now. You can check in via web 6 hours before departure.

Malaysian Airlines

Malaysian Airlines are a average airline. Our flight from Melbourne (Australia) to Kuala Lumpur in economy class got delayed 1.5 hours because of 'technical' problems. The flight entertainment systems were great, but the food was very ordinary. Then because of the delay, we missed our following flight and we had to run to catch the flight to penang. When we arrived, as we had to run, our bags weren't with us. Despite the bags being at the airport early the next day (9.00am) they werent delivered as promised and we got them at 2pm. On the flight home to Australiain economy class the plan got delayed because of the weather, but then we recieved a further delay because another 'technical' delay. The flight was good and they served for a late supper (midnight) chicken and rice and some beef or something. That was a lot better quality food than before. But the only thing that at 2:00 in the morning they had still let the cabin lights on so it was hard to get to sleep. Overall i wouldnt fly malaysian airlines again through bad experience, i would give Malaysian Airlines a 5/10.

fly malaysian airlines air malaysia into KL from diffferent parts of the world.
the beautiful sarongs make the ladies look very attractive. the oriental face is a change from the usual asian or european look.
the service is good by the ladies but male attendants poor fellows they just try to finish the job.
arriving into KLIA is a pleasure.
beer is served without hesitation. and requests are generally not turned down for milder beverages.
inflight enetertainment system is archaic.ausio is very poor quality.

Low Cost Carrier Terminal at KLIA
buayadarat profile photo
buayadarat 13 reviews

After only one year in operation the Low Cost Carrier Terminal at KL International Airport seems to be too small already. While the other terminal is mostly empty, the LCCT is already pretty crowded.
The story of this terminal of course goes along with the success of Air Asia. A few days ago, Air Asia has occupied about fifty of the seventy check-in counters, two other counters are used by Cebu Pacific, for the moment there are no other airlines there yet.

In both of the restaurants, as well as in the seating area for international departure, there were almost no seats available anymore.

Unfortunately you can not get to this terminal by any of the trains, there are only buses and taxis, but on the other hand - you pay less and you get less; this budget terminal ist still better than some "full fare" terminals in South-East-Asia.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)

ATXtraveler 2028 reviews

If you are flying into Kuala Lumpur, you will most likely be flying through KUL. KUL is a major international hub, with flight connections to a large number of major cities. It is also the main hub for Malaysian Airlines, so this will be your first destination if flying in direct from LAX on Malaysian.
I was transferring from Singapore when I enjoyed the KLIA, so my choice of airline here was Singapore Airlines. Both Singapore and Malaysian are members of the Star Alliance, so you can use this if you are a United or Lufthansa member.

I am also a member of OneWorld, and the only participating airline that flies here is Cathay Pacific.

I flew from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur with Airasia and used the same company for some more trips in South east Asia.
What I can say is that they are really convenient and reliable, just very slow in check in so, you should really be in the airport 2 hours before the departure.
Kuala Lumpur has 2 airports, Airasia departs and land in Kuala Lumpur Low cost Companies, it is not just for internal flights, infact I used the same airport also to go to Philippines.
You do not have any bus taking you from the aircraft to the airport, but in case of rain there will be some nice attendants giving you airasia umbrellas.
