Air Travel: Cheap airfare

  • AirAsia flies all over Asia cheaply. We flew to Langkawi from KL for 75$ round triio and you can get cheaper air fare at different times. The seats are not assigned but we got seats next to each other every time and we were some of the last ones on the plane. No food is served but you can buy food and drink cheaply. They don't waste any time getting you there either.

  • Check out Air Asia's web site for details of flights into KL. AirAsia now fly direct to KL from Australia including Melbourne, Perth and Gold Coast. Flights arrive at eh Low cost Carrier Terminal LCCTand you can buy a Sky bus ticket on the flight which will take you to KL Sentral. From there you can get a cab to your hotel.

  • If flying to/from KL, don't use road transport to get to/from the airport, the traffic coming out of KL in our case even on a Saturday afternoon was humungous, we should have used the fast train which takes 35minutes instead of the hour 15 it took by car despite sitting on 120-130kmh, once clear of the city.

  • KLIA is located about 45 kms from KL. It might serve you weel if you know a couple of
estimated prices to get to KL (as of April 2003):
    - KLIA express train (to KL Sentral) is the best choice for one person, 35 RM ro the city, 70 RM return (adults), special rates for return in 6 hours and frequent flyers, see: www.kliaekspres.com
    - buy a voucher at the taxi stand in the arrival hall: 92 RM for a cab, takes you to any place in KL (so no need for further transportation)
    - for 2-3 people the best choice might be to bargain for a cab, you will see people hunting for you. We travelled both metered and unmetered (meaning km price + highway tolls), there is no big difference between them, bargaining in advance makes it more reliable. 60-70 RM is a good price.

    Air Travel: Malaysian Airlines

  • Malaysian Airlines are a average airline. Our flight from Melbourne (Australia) to Kuala Lumpur in economy class got delayed 1.5 hours because of 'technical' problems. The flight entertainment systems were great, but the food was very ordinary. Then because of the delay, we missed our following flight and we had to run to catch the flight to penang. When we arrived, as we had to run, our bags weren't with us. Despite the bags being at the airport early the next day (9.00am) they werent delivered as promised and we got them at 2pm. On the flight home to Australiain economy class the plan got delayed because of the weather, but then we recieved a further delay because another 'technical' delay. The flight was good and they served for a late supper (midnight) chicken and rice and some beef or something. That was a lot better quality food than before. But the only thing that at 2:00 in the morning they had still let the cabin lights on so it was hard to get to sleep. Overall i wouldnt fly malaysian airlines again through bad experience, i would give Malaysian Airlines a 5/10.

Air Travel: Low cost airline-avoiding extra baggage charges

  • hello there,

im a 23 year old student in KL, and a frequent flyer with Airasia. Here's a trick, in LCCT: build a good rapport with the person behind the check in counter. Often if i have excess baggage, he will just it go.
Or, what u can do is transfer 5kgs or other heavy items in ur hand luggage. they're quite lenient with the handluggage ie. they do not weight it in. I often put my heavy items, like books in my backpack and other light items in my check in luggage. and it often works. sometimes my backpack is heavier than my check in luggage!
and if u are worried about ur hand luggage size, Do not. AirAsia or most airlines in Malaysia are not strict with Ur hand luggage size, as long as it fits in the cabin.

this trick applies to mostlow cost airlines. ive used this on most airlines in both asia and europe like airasia, ryanair, firefly, jetair, tiger etc.

In short, be nice, pack heavy in hand luggage, have big (but reasonable) sized hanglugage size.

    hope this helps.

    kind wishes,
    izad in Kuala Lumpur

Air Travel: Taking the Skybus from KLIA LCCT to KL Sentral

  • If you arrive at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) at KLIA, and take a Skybus for RM9 to KL Sentral, beware of the taxi touts when you get to KL Sentral. It would be much cheaper when you get off the bus, to go up the stairs, go through KL Sentral to the taxi ranks either in front of KL Sentral facing the Hilton, or at the KLIA Ekspres arrival Hall where you have to get a coupon to a pre-determined destination.

At least there you get ripped off officially by the taxi companies & KL Sentral management (because the coupon system is still more expensive than if you go by just the taxi meter).

Air Travel: KLIA is the main airport...

  • KLIA is the main airport serving KL. However it is quite a distance away from the city center. Expect to pay taxi between RM60-90 for a one way ride to the city center. Make sure you take the official airport taxi or airport limo. You have to buy the ticket in advance at the counter after you go through customs, before you leave the arrival area. Alternatively, there is another booth near the domestic arrivals. Paying in advance means that you are paying a standard and pre set fare. Often there are taxi touts operating just outside the terminal. These are privately owned and they charge if not as much, more than the preset fare.
The best way to get around KL is to use the LRT or taxi. The Lrt is great because that means you wont get stuck in traffic but they have not completed the lines yet. When taking a taxi, make sure that the driver uses a meter.

For those had plenty of time to spend in Malaysia or in the region, you might sometimes want to do some trip outside of KL. Airasia the famous budget airline in Asia Pacific grew very quickly now ticket shops can be found in KL Sentral, its like a ticketing agencies. You may get a better quote directly from the agent rather from online. Do check out, if you happen to have plan to do some excursion outside of KL city.
