Scams & Confidence Tricksters: Touts at the Towers

I've just heard from the relevant people that lately there have been "tour guides" that offer tourists cheap tickets to go up to the Sky Bridge at the PETRONAS Twin Towers. They get a group of tourists together, then go off to fetch the tickets and charge these tourists something like RM10 per ticket. Please remember THE TRIP UP TO THE SKY BRIDGE IS FREE!! You just have to go and get the tickets from the counters which open at 8.30 a.m. The view isn't THAT brilliant from the Sky Bridge because you are behind glass and it's not really very high up at Level 41, but hey.. it's free and you get to see the building inside. You also get to see an overview of the KLCC Park and surrounds (including my house if you only knew which one it was!), but for a better view of the KL city skyline you may want to go up the KL Tower instead. There is a revolving restaurant there with a wide variety of food which sucks, however. You can also get McDonald's but the food is not much better actually. But, again, with the KL Tower you have to pay. The Sky Bridge is free...! Tickets may run out fast since there's a limit of 1400 people up to the Sky Bridge per day so go early and be prepared to wait. Group tours are timed (I think 8.30 - 10.30 a.m. and 2.00 - 4.00 p.m.) and restricted to 20 people per session.

    Dodgy People: Dodgy Agressive Men.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This happened to me 2x's once from a Taxi driver and once from a man in a restaurant. I was traveling alone on business and later meeting up with friends (however in both situations the men didn't know that). However, they both said something to the effect of "where are you staying?" me: "Name of hotel or area" "I have never seen a room there, do you mind if I come see you room?" or" will you show me your room, I have never seen a room at that hotel before?" Do women really fall for this? It gave me the CREEPS and I diplomatically avoided telling each of them where I really thought they should go and opted for advising them to ask the front desk to show them a room, they could NOT see mine. One guy even went to try and debate it, like it was open for discussion????? And the other took personal offense and stormed off, cause he was a self-proclaimed "wealthy successful business man" (who cares & good riddance) aaaarrrrgh.... All I can say is this cannot end well, & there is safety in numbers, Stay in public areas where there are other people around and make sure no one follows you to your hotel much less your room. If they get on the elevator, don't get off on your floor, push a whole bunch of buttons and go back to the lobby. Or even have a bellmen escort you to your room from the get go. Don't fear traveling alone, you can have the most amazing experience and meet some incredible people with high integrity and no ulterior motives. Just be aware and stay safe.

    Work with me
  • Tip Rating:
  • Warnings! This is our Prime Minister's slogan, work with me. This is certainly not a classify ad to employ workers around the world. I put up here as a warning otherwise some of you might think he wants to employ workers. This is definitely a joke. I just want to entertain myself. Pak Lah is doing great, so let's work with him.

Smelly Fruit: Durian - King of Fruit
  • Tip Rating:
  • With such a grandiose title as that, what could be wrong or dangerous about the Durian, especially considering it is such a popular fruit in SE Asia? Probably because this ungainly and spiky football sized fruit stinks to high heaven! It is the cultural equivalent of Marmite - you will either love it or hate it! The smell is similar to that of the decomposing body of small creature, but despite this millions of people eat it when its in season! If you're 'game' (another form of decomposing foodstuff!), why not try a slice at a local stall making sure not to get any over yourself in the process - you never know, you may decide you like the taste of rotting flesh... ;-) Its unique 'perfume' is so all pervading that most hotels ban it by posting 'No Durian' signs in the foyers and lift areas with a warning that you will have to pay a 'fumigation' fine if you stink out one of their rooms...!

    KLCC parking lots
  • Tip Rating:
  • just a reminder, to note the parking floor where you park your car ! there's are 4 floors for parking and if you actually can't remember where your car is park - it's sure going to take you some time to look for it ! and yes, I am talking from experience ! we had to walk all over the 4 different level to find the car and also with the help of the patrol guards ! also, had to pay extra as the time expired for the parking ticket ! next time, I will write down the level and the parking lot #

Theft & Pickpocketing: Pickpockets and Street Thieves

Apparently KL has quite a reputation for petty theft, and I have to say that when here I was almost the victim of this kind of crime for the first time in my life! We had just got onto a crowded LRT train at Pasar Seni, with bodies of fellow passengers crushed up against us all around. Luckily we guard each other's backs when in situations like this and quickly became aware that something might be up as a nearby passenger seemed to be snaking his arm around me like a contortionist feeling for valuables. I was able to turn and position myself so that I could monitor him, but although we were fairly certain what had happened, we could not be 100% sure to confront him with unpredictable consequences... He left at the next stop. He was young, slightly built and (cliche) 'shifty-looking'. Remember, always follow common sense with valuables - the reason nothing was taken from me was that I had nothing of value that could easily be stolen... Don't let carelessness ruin your holiday! P.S. Although my picture is a street scene, it could easily happen here as well as on the LRT.

Taxi Driver Scams: KLIA Illegal Taxis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please make sure to take the approved Airport Limo (in white) at KLIA. Do not take the illegal taxis since they are not insured and the charges are more expensive. Usually the runners will start with 'Psst...taxi sir?', just ignore them and go straight to the Airport Limo counters at the arrival hall.

Traffic & Roads: Careful Crossing the Streets

If you are not used to it, you can have a hard time crossing the street. At times it seemed like motorcycles are coming towards you from all directions. I think people do get used to it...locals seemed to not miss a beat in crossing the road...working out a rhythm to walk towards the ongoing traffic without a fear they would get run over. I, of course, hesitated, and ended up in the middle of the road. It seems the pedestrian signals takes forever to come on, and when it does, you are immediately running to get across in time. Pay attention please.

Theft & Pickpocketing: Beware of Bag Snatchers
  • Tip Rating:
  • There were many reports of hand-bag snatching in the newspapers some months ago especially when the cases resulted in severe injury or death. SO be careful, don't be too conspicuous ! I have witnessed a snatch robbery in broad daylight, when a pair of men on a motorcycle came from behind a couple and snatched the bag of the girl who was nearer the road ........ and they boy did nothing ......... too shocked and dumbfounded .........
