Taxi Driver Scams: Beware Of Taxi Drivers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another point with taxi drivers is to make sure they charge you a fair price for the journey. The taxis outside of Menara Tower seem to be there with the intention of making a quick killing from unsuspecting tourists. When I asked how much a taxi would be to the Petronas Towers they wanted to charge more than I had paid from my hotel to the city centre for a journey that was a fraction of the distance. I ended up just walking between the two landmarks in a short space of time.

    If you do take a taxi, make sure that they reset the metre when you get in and take note of the charges that are on the cab windows.

    Taxi Driver Scams: I Don't Want To Go There
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is worth pointing out that many taxi drivers are reluctant to take you anywhere that they deem to be not centrally located during busy periods. They obviously believe that such a journey will earn them less per minute than short trips around the centre.

    Taxi Driver Scams: Beware When You're Around Puduraya Area
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please buy your express bus ticket from the counter. If someone offers you a ticket, say no because they will mark it up and maybe the bus company didnt exist at all.

    If you hail for a cab, ask them whether they use meter or their own rate and make sure the meter is on. If not, take another cab. Sometimes they can charge you triple price as they know you are a tourist.

    Do not use back lane/short cut around Central Market or Puduraya area especially at night and when you travel alone. Drug addicts conquers the lane.

    Taxi Driver Scams: Watch out for untrustworthy taxi drivers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many taxi drivers (on a number of occasions, the local Malay ones) love to extort high taxi fares from visitors. Many of them refused to switch on the meter and instead, rely on bargaining as a tool. I generally (the word here is "generally") do not face this issue when it comes to the local Chinese or local Indian drivers.

    You should never pay more than MYR10 for traveling within the City itself. Haggle and bargain if necessary and walk away to another taxi if necessary. Why give these lying folks the satisfaction of earning that extra hard-earned money from you?

    (Disclaimer: Fellow VT member "khal2zu" took offence at what he perceives as racial discrimination in this tip. I stand by my observations, which are made based purely on my personal experiences. You may have much more pleasant experiences, of local drivers of all races and I wish every traveler the best of fortunes and luck.)

    Street corpse
  • Tip Rating:
  • This kind of scene is not rare in Kuala Lumpur and probably the whole Peninsular Malaysia. This is a kitten's corpse being wheeled over by tyres many times to form such a shape on the street of Kuala Lumpur. I snap this picture from somewhere nearby Chinatown. Tourists should learn to be very careful when crossing roads.

    Traffic & Roads: When Shopping on Weekends..
  • Tip Rating:
  • Start early in the morning - 10 am sounds about right, if you dont want to be stuck in the traffic congestion or waiting for a cab. AT worst 2 hours before lunch..thats about 11am... getting into popular shopping center during lunch hours is sheer night mare.

    Theft & Pickpocketing: Snatch thieves in KL and PJ
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please do be careful when in KL. The petty crime rate is quite high.

    When I travel to KL on business, my KL colleagues will always remind me to be careful while on the streets. There are about 10 women in my KL office, and all of them have been victims of snatch thieves. One of them has a very bad injury on her shin to remind her of the theft for the rest of her life.

    Do take care.

    Delinquent Primates: Mischievous macaques!
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you are visiting the Batu Caves please be careful of the mischievous macaques who do a good trade when unwitting guests arrive.

    Whether or not you intend to feed these playful primates they may end up with your lunch without your consent.

    These quick and crafty critters may snatch and grab your much anticipated meal before you can yell "Stop thief!".

    Hang on to your hats 'n' snacks;
    and watch your backs;
    they may be small and cute;
    but they'll snatch your fruit and loot!

    And visit the Malaysian Butterfly World in Jalan Cenderasari (within 5 min from the Bird Park). This fanatstic tropical valley is worth a visit indeed. Don't come to late during the day or most of the butterflies are alseep. The valley is covered with a huge net and in the valley there are rivers, waterfalls and many different plants. Open daily from 9-17h. Entrance fee is 5 RM (camera 1 Rm extra)!

    Be Careful at Kuala Lumpur International Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHILE IN KLIA

    Pass it on..... let more people be aware of such things around them.

    Recently, a new type of crime has surfaced in town. It goes something like this:- Somebody slips a handphone into your pocket.

    Sometimes it could be just a wallet with an identity card and a few ringgit. A few minutes later, the 'owner' comes up and confronts you, the 'thief '. He makes a big commotion that you stole his stuff. You, caught unaware, are then pulled aside by the 'owner' for a settlement. You are intimidated and threatened that if you do not pay up, the police will be brought in. If you pay up, this 'owner' lets you go.

    Another strange thing is that there always seems to be a 'witness' to your 'theft'.

    I am told this often happens to foreigners at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or even at LRT trains. Given that you're 'guilty until proven innocent' as far as the Malaysian police are concerned, I understand some poor people are in jail for these 'offences'. At the KLIA, the 'owner' throws his handphone and wallet with the few ringgit notes into the luggage trolley of a just arrived passenger. The drama unfolds a few minutes later. The real culprit has easily convinced our Malaysian police to arrest the real victim (if he has not paid up the 'settlement' demand). This is a very serious matter. This is another form of extortionists operating in broad daylight. They are disgusting criminals who will do anything to rob and steal. The sickening part of the whole scenario is that unless you pay the "quoted settlement" money, they will put you in real trouble by calling the police. The real culprit gets back his handphone and the would be victim ( i.e. could be any one of us) is thrown into the police lock up and charged in court. So do be very careful, otherwise you may end up as a "thief" as you have no way to prove your innocence.
