Off the tourist trap

For KL, in addition to the more usual sights, I would also recommend the Thean Hou Chinese temple and the Maha Vira Buddhist temple in nearby Brickfields, where you will find statues of Buddha as depicted internationally - I recall a black Buddha: very interesting! :) And if you can't make your way to Batu Caves, for some reason, at least take a look at the Sri Mahariamman Hindu temple in Jalan Bandar, from which the silver chariot rides to Batu Caves every Thaipusam!
