Quite a few juvenile black tipped reef sharks swim in the safety of the shallows around Royal Island. They are quite timid and will swim away from you if you approach them but if you stand still in the shallows they will come quite close to your legs and you can have a great view of these beautiful little creatures. They are not longer than a metre so there is no cause for concern, in fact they look cute enough to touch. The best place to see them are at the service jetty right near Delphis Dive Center.

Obvioulsy a lot of people go to the Maldives to dive, and why not, the warm waters makes for very comfortable diving ( I didn't even wear a wet suit) and the abundance of sea life is like nothing you'll have seen before. I saw so many moray eels that I stopped paying them any attention. I saw a number of turtles and even a few Eagle Rays. But the most impressive sight I saw were the Manta Rays. Apparently the best time of year to see them is from May to July when there is lots of plankton in the water. With lots of plankton the viz drops a bit but you can still expect to have some great 25 to 30m viz. The Baa Atoll is one of the best places to see Manta during the 'Monsoon' months, but expect to get a bit of rain as well. Address: Baa Atoll
