KUONI

by steveandmich

If your thinking of going to White Sands with Kuoni I would strongly advise you not to.We went to a wedding in the Cayman Islandsand had to be evacuated the day we arrived due to hurricane Mitch.Kuoni left us to our own devices when we had to fly to Miami(losing our luggage en route) and eventually after a battle only gave us a small portion of the price we paid back in compensation.Other relatives who went with different tour companies got full refunds. We received the least.Let that be a warning to anyone whos thinking of booking with KUONI.

Walk around the island

by steveandmich

Take the walk around the whole island.Takes about an 1 1/2 hours at a steady pace but is worth it. Unfortunately there are some grotty parts, mainly where the staff quarters are with general litter and discarded building materials. This does spoil it a bit and the management should try and get it cleaned up.

Money exchange

by thelittlevoice

You can easily use US Dollars everywhere but if you decide to change some Rufiyaas then make sure you keep the receipt. The bank at Male' Airport wants to see it when you change Rufiyaa back to US dollars. This is what the receptionist at the hotel told me but when I got to the airport, this bank already closed and I had to change the money at a shop instead which was easy as well.

Be Safe in the sun, not sorry!

by philmayne

Wear plenty of high SPF sun screen! While we were on Meeru, one girl got really sunburnt on here first day and then spent the rest of her holiday in her accomodation in absolute agony. Also, wear a T-shirt when you're snorkelling. You really don't feel the heat of the sun when you're in the water, but it burns just as much as when your on dry land.

Treat yourself to a massage

by Beestie

The evening before we came home my husband paid for me to have a massage in the Coconut Spa.The massage lasted for an hour and by the time it was finished I felt as if I were floating. I have never felt so relaxed.High recommended - well worth every penny

Perfection

by Beestie

It is impossible to single out one part of my holiday that I felt was the best - it all was.The whole experience is something which will stay with me forever. One of the reasons we took so many photographs was so that I could remember every part of the holiday and at the moment I relive it daily! The beach, the very large crystal clear lagoon full of all those colourful fish and coral, the snorkeling, kayaking, night fishing, playing ball with my 2 children in the lagoon each day, the water village bar and jetty, the island village, the restaurants, the staff who made the holiday what it was - paradise. Words cannot describe what you will find in the Maldives - it really is something special and the only way to enjoy it to its fullest is to experience it first hand.Try it, you will not disappointed. One of the things I have missed is the walk we took each evening after our meal. We would...

Nationalities

by MattTB

Most resort islands are dominated by a certaian nationality. In Fun Island's case this was German, followed by British, then Italians, then a few French. Socalising wise each nationality tends to stick to itself, so it's nice to have guests from lots of different countries on the island, so there is no predominant group!

GORDON THE GECKO (AND FRIENDS)

by DOUGALSMUM

Most accomadation in the maldives have part open air bathrooms which in itself is pretty unique-another unique addition to the bathroom is that there is usually at least one gecko in residence! (geckos are the cute little lizards that can run on the ceiling and walls as they have little stickers on their feet)even the most sqeemish person cant help but fall in love with these little fellas-and dont forget they keep the mossi population down.just check the toilet seat before you sit down!!! one of my fondest memories of the gecko population is having to get my neighbour to remove "gerald" the baby gecko from my loo . yes i know he is tiny but i was still frightened of him- no matter how sweet he is!!!

Seasons

by wto

Generally, the year is divided into 2 monsoon seasons. The North-East, from December to March and the South-West from May to November. The South-West being the wetter season. We were there in June, the 'wetter season', but only experienced rain 3 times, 1st morning before breakfast (a kind of instant reminder of home) and twice more in the night. The morning rain passed quickly and was quite refreshing in the heat. The temperature remains constant even in the periods of rain, unlike at home, and the the Sun is still hot through a cloudy sky. When it comes down to choosing a time to visit the Maldives, don't let the 'rainy monsoon season' put you off visiting at that time of year.

Take plenty of film with you. There may not be many different sights to take photos of but you can get some stunning "picture postcard" shots that look like they came straight from a brochure! See attached picture!
