Be aware that the Maldives are a 100% muslim country. Any religious items that do not pertain to the muslim faith will be confiscated at the airport. You are prohibited from bringing alcohol or pornography into the Maldives (this may include magazines that show partial nudity but aren't necessarily classed as pornography).
You can be fined if you take any shells or coral from the islands. I collected shells, arranged them on the sand and photograghed them. I then returned the shells to the ocean or left them on the beach where I found them.
Be aware that topless sunbathing is not permitted either.
