Body Covering

by Conflictrealms

Although not that important at the Island resort of the Maldives. You really should respect the local culture and religeon when at the airport, or on any excursions to village islands. You should cover your shoulders to knees when in these places. Though as mentioned before, the staff at the resorts arent that bothered as they are so relaxed and laid back. Though you may want to cover up for dinner, just for manners!

No BYOB (Bring your own bottle)

by Restless-in-kl

I love wine and whenever there is a chance to go to a romantic island getaway like Maldives, the wine bottle comes along too. Unfortunately, when we arrived at Male airport, we were asked to remove all alcohol drinks/bottles from our luggage and check it at immigration. We will only see our wine bottle when we are ready to leave Maldives. It was a sad day to say au revoir to our wine and pay so much more at the resort when we needed some booze :(

Put 'em Away!

by LisaMJ

Ladies,Please remember that this is a Muslim country. They are being lenient enough with our Western Cultures by letting alcohol be served and allowing us to prance around in our bikinis.BUT, please do not go topless in public in the Maldives. It is offensive. While walking between room and pool/beach, make sure you have a cover up on, such as a sarong.Thank you.

Be hospitable

by trisanna

Maldivians are very welcoming and friendly people. They are welcoming us onto their land and we should respect their culture. It's important to dress appropriately when not on the beach. No topless sunbathing and it's important to cover up with a tshirt or sarong. Our hotel had a policy they wouldn't serve anyone, who wouldn't cover up from the beach. Not sure how much it's enforced though.

The Tomb of the Last Sultan

by batgirl1001

We came upon this tomb, right in the middle of Male in a prominent area. However there was very little information written about it and just says it was the tomb of the last king of Maldives. We had initially thought it was something quite old and ancient. Turns out, after a little digging with local sources, the last king or sultan of Maldives was around the 1960s and died shortly after quite tragically. It seems that the Maldives have experimented with monarchy and republic throughout their history. The first president Nasir lives now in exile in Singapore while their second president Gayoom has survived 2 coups throughout his governance, and just recently a demonstration in 2004. The protest which was suppose to be peaceful ended in a riot. Unfortunately not much is known since outside foreign media is not allowed. Come to think of it, I didn't see any newspapers when I am there either.

Me and Schoolboys

by batgirl1001

Hmm.....I was minding my business sitting under a shaded tree getting a respite from the hot sun, when the bell suddenly rang. Turns out, I was sitting right near a school.Out came a bunch of school boys who seemed shy at first but curious about me who obviously was a tourist. We talked and their English is not bad. They seemed excited I am from Singapore, goodness knows why.....but quite determined to take their picture with me.Hence, the photo. A chatty bunch and quite friendly. Seems like school is segregated and boys do not go to the same school with girls. And these boys are the sons of wealthy and important Maldivians, so they are the privileged lot. After exchanging goodbyes, I gave them some Singapore coins as gifts.

Museum

by batgirl1001

This, oddly enough was their national museum where it houses bits and pieces of their history and culture. You need to pay to enter. I forgot how much exactly but think it is $3. The museum is small and by the picture, you would think it was someone's house and garden. Plus it doesn't have much information about their history or people, so it is up to you if you are willing to spend time and money to enter. We did. Still wondering if it was worth it. As it seems, Maldivian history is shrouded in mystery. Not much is known about the country and it seems the earliest record was around the 2nd century where Arab traders recorded their visits to these islands. Before that, it was all speculation. No one truly knows but there is a lot of good theories. Nevertheless, we encountered some remnants of Buddhist artifacts (bits and pieces really) around the island. Destroyed of course. It's...

A Glittering Minaret in Paradise

by batgirl1001

This minaret is from the National Mosque in Male. It is quite large for a tiny island and seems to be, for the moment deserted. The mosque is modern and well-designed. However it forbids foreigners from entering; saying you need expressed permission. I wonder if the sign is still there.....Maldives is 100% Islamic and is a restrictive country. No other religion is permitted to practice in the Maldives although the Maldivians have some mystic beliefs. The men are quite traditional and the women are usually seen but not heard. In my time there, I never spoke to any women though they were all around.

sort of local customs...

by call_me_rhia

Most resorts offer Ayurvedic massage centres, even though they are not typical Maldivian. The masseurs all coem from India and vary from fair to good. On Bathala the massage centre was so well hidden that no one ever thought of having one. There are several types of massage available, generally speaking -and the best is the full body massage. In Bathala don't book the 45 minutes one, book the 30 minutes ... the masseurs are not really so much in a hurry that they will stop bang on time: they'll finish the massage - often in over 45 minutes anyway.

Photography of Locals

by fashionapple

Its always better to get permission from locals before you take their photo. Women do not like to be photographed. Maldives is muslim country with 100% muslim population. Even older men get offended some times if you take their photograph without permission. So respect the culture & traditions and always ask before taking photographs.
