Respect

by philmayne

I don't know whether this is specific to Meeru or whether it's a Maldivian thing, but we found that some of the resort staff seemed quite surly and disinterested at first. Some holiday makers reacted to this by being rude and impatient with the staff which, unsuprisingly, only resulted in them receiving bad service. We found that if you treated the staff with courtesy and politeness, you got it back once they got to know you.

Respect the locals

by MOSSETT

Just remember that you are visiting their country and you should always respect them.So remember no topless bathing !!Also you should find that the waiters in the restaurant are from the Maldives and the waiters in the Bar are generally from Sri Lanka or India because it is against their religion to serve alchol. They are very nice, helpful people so make sure you tip them at the end of your holiday because they don't earn a great deal.

Keep some clothes on

Please remember that the Maldives is a Muslim Country. All Maldivians are Muslims of the Sunni sect and you must respect Muslim sensibilities. Nudity is strictly forbidden and women must not go topless. Bikinis (even the smallest) and brief bottoms are quite acceptable in resorts but you should cover up when dining or visiting other islands that are inhabited by locals.

Moslem Country

by Perucha

Maldives has 100% population of Moslem. Respect their religion by not taking alcohol into the country and not skin dipping :-)FYI, Friday is their public holiday of the week -treated like our Sunday. Maybe, instead of TGIF, they have TGIT? :-P

Ramadan

by slippy007

This means the local people cannot eat between sunrise and sunset, check when this is before travelling as you dont half feel guilty feeding your face in front of them. And so its not a good time to visit Male etc as there will be limited places open to get food or drink.

maldives is a muslim country

by DOUGALSMUM

maldives is a muslim country, the maldivian people are extremely hospitable people, the least you can do whilst in their country is show respect to their culture. On the resort islands things are quite easy going, but on inhabitated islands you must cover arms chest and thighs (this includes men)-no shorts, low cut tops or swimwear. THIS INCLUDES THE AIRPORT so no travelling to the airport in shorts and bikini top to catch those last few rays before your flight home!come on guys, its the least we can do after they have shared their beautiful country with us and have been such welcoming hosts! Also no bringing duty free in- alchohol is banned except on the tourists islands (where it is freely available) any duty free booze will be confiscated at hulalhe airport (you can collect it when you check in for your return flight- but is it really worth the hassle).

Muslim country

by pauleast

The Maldives are a Muslim country and therefore their traditions should be respected. Women should dress conservatively outside the resort islands and observe customs such as Ramadan if visiting other non resort islands

Nude? No!

by o00o

It must be said that official regulations do not allow public nudity anywhere in the Maldives. Even at the beach on your resort or swimming or snorkelling around your cruise boat. At least bikinis or swimming trunks is a must.

The Maldives is a Muslim...

by MrGQ

The Maldives is a Muslim country. What does that mean Nico? Well .. Its pretty open and liberal in the resorts, However, if you should go visit some of the natives Islands you have to keep in mind no Alchole running naked in the street or screaming I am Free I amd Free is allowed! They are simple and kind so lets not abuse that like some of the rare bad arrogant tourists do! I am sure non of those is here on this website! :)

When we went to visit a typical fishermen village I went along the street and had a look at their houses and shops. It happened to be a school break so a lot of kids were playing around, all so beautiful in their white uniforms. But a lot of them instead, were sitting in the shadow reading books, singing and writing down something.Maldives have a very low percentage of illiteracy: the 90% of the population go to school
