Maldives are a good example of...

by babx

Maldives are a good example of a sustainable, environmental-friendly tourism. As they don't produce anything and have to import nearly everything, Maldives are not a cheap choice for holyday. But in this way, discouraging low budget and free tourism, they have reduced to minimum social and natural impact. Nearly all the population is Sunni Muslim so the consume of alcohol is permitted only in the resorts: people working in the bar are not Maldivian but come from India or Bangladesh. In the resorts don’t work any women, only men.Remember they don't have water except sea water so they have to purify all the water you use in the island: so don't waste it!

Maldives are a muslimic republic, that means that all citizens of maldives are muslims - please keep that in mind when visiting the country. There are 1200 islands of which approximately 200 are populated and about 100 tourist resorts. tourist are not allowed to visit all islands, for most you need a special permit.but on organized tours/daytrips either by boat or waterplane you can visit several tourist resorts and local islands. on local islands you can see, the way of maldivian living.in male you can visit fish market/fruit market, friday mosquem sultans park etc.

by steventilly

Maldives is a Muslim country so when you visit inhabited islands respect their culture, which means women should cover up. Your resort island is a lot more lax but topless (and nude) sunbathing is not allowed, with a 1500 dollar fine for those who flout this law.You are not allowed to visit other islands unless you have a permit (or are with a tour). At Meeru there was another island so close you could (literally) walk to it - but it's not allowed!

by elmasri

Maldivian women do not work so you will find that the chambermaid is actually a room boy. Expect to tip him $10 per week. However this is quite acceptable because they clean your room twice a day and make you beds in the morning and decorate them in the evening. The flower decorations are only done on the night before you leave.(see picture)If you want to take pictures of the children in the local islands it is, I consider, of good taste to ask first. I am actually sending some back to the resort and one of the tour guides will be delivering them to the children.

by Gnome

Respect the people here, as they are probably going to be the first people to experience global warming first hand. When the oceans rise, the Maldives is scheduled to be the first country to sink completely under the sea, as the highest point is only 3 metres above sea level. If you are into mountain climbing, this is probably not a good place for an adventure!

visit an Island where the locals live. The Maldivian gouvernment try to keep the locals separated as much as possible from the tourists, however it is possible to visit some islands.JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON'T END UP HERE!!!
