Himmafushi: Local people are waiting for you to buy some things. Very poor island (I think all of them are the same). Anyway You must see it, just to know the real true behind life in Maldives.Included in Island hopping program on Paradise Island.

SUNSETSSunsets in Maldives are breathtaking. You just sit in fron of the hut, staring at the horizon, and see the sun sink while those little fishes jump in front of you and birds sing in the trees... Oh, I'm getting too romantic now!!

by steventilly

Dhiffushi relies on fishing and the neighbouring tourist islands for it's economy. Although 'poor' by our standards, most islands provide all of the basic needs for their inhabitants, food, accomodation, health care and education. Each island is a village unto itself ranging in size from 700 to 9000 inhabitants, though in the case of the capital, Male, there are 75000 inhabitants. Here's a typical street on Dhiffushi

by steventilly

When you are on your resort island, surrounded by luxury and in the company of your fellow guests, it's easy to forget that outside of this mini-paradise Malidives is to all intents a third world country. They do not suffer with starvation, homelessness, disease and social unrest in the way that many third world countries do, which is to be appluaded. Visit some local islands to get a taste of the simple lives of these Maldive people. These are some local children on Dhiffushi.

Visit some of the local islands if you can. Your resort will organise 'island hopping' tours (by boat). At Meeru there is a neighbouring inhabited island Dhiffushi only 200m away off the southern tip. A Dhoaini boat will take you there (the 4 boys at the front of the boat are 'navigating' it through the narrow coral channels, giving signals to the driver at the rear of the boat!If you are interested, there is an extensive travelogue on local life.

I think it is always nice to visit an inhabited island and see and feelthe life of an islander.Watching them catch tuna for instance or weaving a basket can be very nice. Its lovely to taste the local cuisinetoo which is largely fish(tuna) based.
