what you shouldn't forget

by call_me_rhia

bring shoes that you can wear in water (like reefshoes)... to protect your feet from corals and especially from the deadly stone-fish high protection sun-screen (40 factor and over). cheap underwater cameras fins, snorkels and mask to enjoy marine life. Bring also a t-shirt for snorkeling, so that you don't burn yourself

Dress Code

by LisaMJ

Although the Maldives are associated with 'No news, no shoes', because we were staying in a top end resort, I thought it might be different. I packed for both eventualities, and I was right to pack my shoes! (Yes, all 9 pairs, but they were very versatile and inclided some lovely jewelled flip flops ;-)During the day, anything goes, although be sure to cover up swimwear in the restaurants. The walkways are sandy, but it's hard sand in places. Anyhow, I would always walk from our room barefoot and slip my shoes back on when we got to the bar/restaurant.Some women dressed in cocktail outfits, while some wore summery, casual, floral skirts and vests. I was somewhere in the middle, and wore silk camisoles, beaded vest tops, a smarter floral dress, black silk skirt, black and white floral skirt, always with a smarter vest /top. And I didn't look out of place. Yes I brought heeled shoes with...

Not much needed!

by Sunchild

Swim wear, shorts and some legere clothes will do! Shoes are very seldom needed :-) Bring all you need - as everything is really expensive! Bring your own films. And enough of them. A An Under- water-camera would be perfect. Can be rented there but is - what? Expensive! All can be bought/rented there, but very expensive. You'll need a few one-dollar-notes for the service-staff (if you pay with credit card). Cash is possible only in US Dollars!

Keep it simple!

by Ali&Steve

Swimmies! Sunglasses! T Shirts & Shorts for gents. Sarongs, light loose gear for ladies, and maybe something slightly more dressy for the evening (to keep up with the Italians!) Flat sandals: heels stick in sand and there's nothing else to tread on! An absolute must for Filitheyo snorkellers - dive bootees or similarly protective footwear because getting out to the house reef across the loose coral and stones can be very painful. Umbrellas are supplied in your room in case of the odd shower.Ali's most important item: Waterproof mascara.Baldies: Don't forget your hat! Steve can testify to the pain and suffering of leaving this essential item behind Bring it all with you. "Personal" items for ladies are four times the price you'd pay at home. Pack sunblock and use it religiously - the Maldivian sun can be deceptively strong.Mossie repellent with plenty of DEET in it is essential, even...

As little as possible..

by sahlenare

If you go by the seaplane out to the other island.. then consider the space.. You do not have much space inside a seaplan. Oh yes I brought shoes.. but I didn't need them.. One of the policies on the resort was - no shoes Bring a underwater camera!

Easy to get a sunburn while snorkelling

by Gard

It is easy to get a sunburn in the strong sun while snorkelling. I got a bit of a burn the first day so I had to wear a t-shirt while I was in the water the next few days. The nest time I go on a beach vacation like this I think I will buy one of those t-shirts that are made for wearing in the water.

You Don't Need Shoes

by reeley

Make sure that your luggage are waterproof in case of tropical downpours when you arrive. Your luggage could well be in the open during the boat transfer You just need flippers and flipflops. Anything else is just wasted luggage allowance. If you need it, bring it. You are not guaranteed to be able to get the medication or brands that you are used to Bring it with you - as much as you can carry. Also, there is so much sand that a small light weight tripod is useful to keep the camera away from the gritty stuff. Underwater cameras are a must - get them with flash included. Light weight shirt or blouse is useful just to give your skin a little respite from the sun occasionally

Useful !

by kissgurami

lots of sun block lotion!! the toiletries provided by the resort were so-so. SO it's best to bring your one and a new bottle of conditioner. It tends to fritz out ur hair. Bring spare underwater disposal cameras. it cost US20 per camera at Maldives Shop. There were too many underwater pix to take that we had to buy one even though we brought 2 along :p Lots of Mineral Water. Coz the tapwater is salty and defintely not drinkable. No tea/coffee making facilities in the resort. Every 1.5 litre of water cost US3. snorkelling n swimming tend to dry u out.

Travel Light

by Custodyspice

Shoes not required, OK, a pair of flip flops would be handy for the evenings. Both parts of bikinis, girls, remember what I said about 'No Jugs Out'. Cover up and wear proper clothing if you're taking a trip to Male, the Capital or inhabited local islands, as it is a muslim country. Underwater camera, a must for attempting to snap those little camera-shy wriggly clown fish! You'll regret it if you dont. And you can explain how the grouper fish that only looks 6 inches in the photo is in fact as long as a three seater sofa.

Take as little as possible!

by Sally01

Take very light clothing & flip flops. We found that you tend to wear the same comfy things for more or less the whole holiday. Travel as light as possible. Take plenty of plasters, antiseptic cream, mosquito repellent & bite cream. I know this sounds a bit scary but if you like to snorkel, you might cut yourself on the coral or rocks. I'm only talking a small cut, but if you get one on the bottom of your foot like I did, you'll need a plaster to keep the sand out. Take an underwater camera (or two if you're getting the disposable ones). We took a disposable one and ended up buying another on while we were out there which cost about $19. Dont bother with a hairdryer. I always take one and after trying to dry my hair once, I packed it away for the rest of the holiday! It's so humid, it takes forever to dry your hair, and if it's thick like mine it'll take forever and a day!!
