Don't leave without sunscreen & bite cream!

by becks5000

Don't need shoes as it's sand everywhere, including in the restaurant! If you burn easily P20 is the best sunscreen I've used. Put it on 90 mins before going out and don't need to re-apply, even after swimming. Mossie spray and bite cream in case you get jelly fish stings. Disposable underwater cameras. They're more expensive to buy on the island. Definitely worth having for snorkling.

Stuff to Bring, and Stuff to Leave at Home

by philmayne

Travel light, once on the island you're not going to need much more in the way of clothing than a few T-shirts, shorts and swim-wear. A pair of flip-flops or sandals are all you'll need for you feet. Most of the time you'll be barefoot anyway!Sarongs are really useful - even for us macho blokes. Hey, if Beckham can do it...... They apparently spray the whole island which might account for the fact that we had no problem with mossies, but you might like to take one of those zapper thingies.Take plenty of high SPF sunscreen - you're going to need it (hopefully!) www.Aquapac.com do some great waterproof bags which enable you to take your camera/camcorder under water. Take your own snorkelling gear. You can rent it from the islands dive centre for about $6 per item per day, but to be honest, it's not that expensive to buy and I'd rather have my own snorkell than use someone elses! If you...

Essentials

Travel light! You don't need much! Swimming costume, shorts etc and a towl! Even evenings are dress down!Bring factor 30 cream, the sun is strong! Bring an old t-shirt to wear in the sea when scuba diving, your back burns..... Mosquito repellent, no Malaria here, but you don't want mosquito dive bombing you all night! Buy a cheap disposable water proof camera if you dont possess a quality water proof camera! You can take good shots with a disposable camera, see the ones on my pages. Flippers, Snorkel and Mask are a must to visit the underwater world! Ladies! I'm not being sexist, but generally the girls are not as into snorkeling as the guys, so bring a good book! :)

First Aid

by Beestie

Make sure you take plenty of painkillers, plasters, sting/bite relief creams, mosquito repellant and of course any prescription medicines that you are likely to need. One recommendation would also be ear drops - you can pick up ear infections when out snorkeling/diving. We personally didn't encounter this problem but there were others on the resort not so fortunate. Its also worthwhile making sure you have sufficient supplies of your toiletries. Most shops on the resort islands offer basics but are very limited and expensive in what they can offer.

If you can buy a waterproof housing for your camera I would highly recommend you do so. Our lagoon was no more than 4ft deep but still contained some of the most amazing fish/coral we had ever seen.Whilst our camera could not do it justice we have still taken away some brilliant pictures we would otherwise not have had.

Sun Creams

by Beestie

If you are reliant on allergy sun creams such as Piz Buin make sure you take more than you feel you may use. As a family of 4 on the resort island for 12 days we got through 15 bottles of sun cream. We really could have done with 2 or 3 more as we had to ration ourselves for the last few days.

Footwear

Invest in a pair of aqua shoes even if you don't intend to snorkel. Being coral islands when walking in the ocean it can become rough/sharp underfoot. Aqua shoes also prevent any nasty surprises should you stand on something that doesn't like being stood on!

INSECT REPELLANT AND BITE REMEDIES ARE A MUST

by DOUGALSMUM

aqua shoes to prevent coral cutsin the ocean plenty of insect repellant, and antihistamine cream and tablets, as mentioned before there is quite a problem with biting insects on kuredu, so be prepared, take plenty of repellant, and if you do get bitten antihistamine cream will cut down any reaction you may suffer- the antihistamine tablets will help stop the itching take plenty of spare film and batteries- and at the very least one disposable underwater camera

YOU ARE GOING TO THE TROPICS!

by DOUGALSMUM

TRY TO TAKE A HOLDALL RATHER THAN A HARD CASE SUITCASE, IT TAKES UP LESS ROOM , AND YOU DONT NEED TO TAKE MUCH WITH YOU ANYWAY. KEEP SOME $1 NOTES HANDY TO GIVE TO YOUR PORTER ON ARRIVAL WHEN HE BRINGS YOUR BAG TO YOUR ROOM (ONE US DOLLAR PER BAG IS THE GOING RATE) CLOTHING SHOULD ALL BE LIGHTWEIGHT, PREFERABLY COTTON OR LINEN. SUNDRESSES, T-SHIRTS, SHORTS, SARONGS. LADIES REMEMBER TO TAKE A LIGHTWEGHT CARDI TO COVER YOUR ARMS IF YOU VISIT ANY LOCAL ISLANDS, IT IS A MUSLIM COUNTRY AND ARMS AND LEGS SHOULD BE COVERED AWAY FROM THE RESORT.DONT FORGET A SUN HAT. An essential item is a pair of aquashoes for wearing in the lagoon (see warnings and dangers) TAKE MOSQUITO REPELLANT, ANTI-HISTAMINE TABLETS AND CREAM IN CASE YOU ARE BITTEN.SAVLON SPRAY (IN CASE OF CORAL CUTS) AND OF COURSE LOTS OF HIGH FACTOR SUNCREAM! YOU MUST TAKE SEVERAL DISPOSABLE UNDERWATER CAMERAS TO CATCH THE AMAZING...

Loads of repellent !!!!!!!

by MOSSETT

Make sure you pack one item of swimwear in your hand luggage because if you are travelling by plane and your case ends up going by boat, you could have a long wait for your clothes to arrive. Who needs shoes ?????????Maybe a pair of sandals for the girls just incase, but I bet you will spent all your time in bare feet !Also plenty of sarong, the Maldivians are particularly offended if you are dress inappropriately. Obviously bring headache pills and 'just incase' toiletries but definitely pack some tablets for upset tummies ! Loads of films for your camera, a video camera if possible and an underwater disposable as well. There are loads of fish ! might be a good idea to wear trousers that zip off into shorts, its boiling when you arrive !
