Kuramathi Island: Vegetarian in the Maldives?

  • Veggie stir-fry at the Cottage - Maldives
    Veggie stir-fry at the Cottage
    by FletteMette
I decided to go to an island with a better-than-average selection of restaurants, and I also opted not to go All Inclusive - since I figured I'd have a better chance of getting decent vegetarian food this way.

The restaurants at Kuramathi weren't exactly great for vegetarians - but there were always some vegetarian dishes available (often a vegetable stir-fry with rice). There's an Indian restaurant in Kuramathi village, and a Thai restaurant near Kuramathi Cottage and Spa - both have a few vegetarian options. The coffee shop at the Cottage offers some decent pizzas and a few other veggie dishes - a good lunchtime option! Much of the vegetarian food you'll get on the island is fairly low on protein (vegetables + rice..) - didn't spot any tofu dishes or similar.

The breakfast buffet at the Cottage was ok, a fairly varied selection of breads, buns and muffins (lots of sugary and/or greasy stuff, I missed some healthier options!), yogurt, cereals, some fruits... not fantastic if you're a veggie, but you definitely won't starve.

I had stocked up on nuts and other "emergency foods" and brought along to the Maldives - and I was glad that I did, the shops on the island have a *very* limited selection of food and snacks, and everything is very expensive.

  • In almost every resort thay offer a romantic dinner - at a price. Expect to pay $175 for your table and if you want Champagne - that will be $275 thank you!

This was in White Sands and you are on the main beach. It's your choice. Does look nice though.....

    Lobster of course!

  • Nasi Goreng with fried egg - Maldives
    Nasi Goreng with fried egg
    by fashionapple
Nasi Goreng is traditional Indonesian / Malaysian dish which is very popular in Maldives. It is very delicious and mouth watering cusine made of chicken, beef, soya sauce & rice blended with local sauces and herbs. Fried egg and special sauce made of oil and red chillies is also served with this dish.

Rice would be of dark brown color and on first sight you may not like this dish. But let me assure you once you had one spoon ful of Nasi Goreng then you would simply never stop!

Nasi Goreng was my favorite food dish in Maldives. Its cost was 35 Maldivian Ruffiya ( $ 3 appox ) at Down town cafe.

There's only one restaurant on Bathala, with sand on the floor, so that you never need to wear shoes - and the meals it serves are all buffet style.

I had heard it before: the fish is never exceptional in the Maldives: confirmed! I only really liked uncooked tuna fish. The restaurant's curries were really good, in general, as well as the other western dishes. What made the difference, however, were the sweets... unbelievably delicious - and plenty of them!

It is hard to eat during daytime, because it is so hot. But the hotel will always keep you satisfied and you can have coffee and pie after lunch.
Haven't been to the coffee time very often, because diving is more important than eating pie! ;))

There are a number of restaurants in Male that serve western style food as well as Asian dishes including Quench, Seagull, Nasandhura Palace Hotel, Park View, Intimate, Symphony, Slice, Kenducky, Island Foods, Rendezvous, Haruge and Twin Peaks. There are also Indian,Thai and Chinese restaurants and several Sri Lankan cafes. Restaurants are also found in the tourist resorts, but getting there is expensive. There are many ‘tea shops’ which do good local fish curries and rice, in addition to sweet and savoury 'short eats' (hedhikaa).

Maldivian food is an interesting combination of Tuna prepared in different ways. 'Garudhiya' (boiled tuna soup), Rihaakuru (a concentrated fish paste), 'Kandu Kukulhu' ( tuna marinated in rich blend of spices & cooked as a curry. Though influence of spicy curries from India & Sri Lanka, Maldives has adapted milder taste.

Frozen meat and dairy products, such as butter and cheese, are only available in specialty supermarkets. White loaf bread is baked daily at several bakeries. Imported fruits such as oranges, apples, pears, peaches, grapes and nectarines are sold at these supermarkets. All imported food is expensive.

Imported soft drinks in cans and locally bottled soft drinks are also available. Alcohol is only available in tourist resorts. Luxury goods such as European chocolate, cereals, are for sale but are expensive.

  • This is another restaurant at the airport but they deal with ice cream and more of western food. Another place to waste the time when you have to wait for your flight for more that 8 hours..

The guidebook mentions several coffee houses and restaurants around Male - we managed to find only one - the Ocean Cafe. It looked nice and welcoming but...

it was Ramadan - thus it stayed closed. We just read the menu - appealing - but we couldn't sample it. Bummer.

IF STAYING ON KURAMATHI ISLAND YOU MUST EAT AT THE SIAM GARDENS (THAI RESTAURANT) AT VERY LEAST ONCE DURING YOUR STAY.
IT IS A LOVELY DECORATED RESTAURANT, DISCREETLY TUCKED AWAY AMONGST THE FOLIAGE (IT TOOK ME THREE DAYS TO FIND IT-IT WAS SO WELL HIDDEN! THE AMBIENCE IS RELAXED/ROMANTIC AND THE SERVICE IS EXCELLENT.ON TOP OF ALL THAT THE PRICES ARE REASONABLE TOO!
THERE IS AN EXTENSIVE MENU, AND ONCE A WEEK THERE IS AN ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFET. I ATE THERE SEVERAL TIMES DURING MY STAY-ALLWAYS ORDERING SOMETHING DIFFERENT ON THE MENU. I WAS NEVER DISAPOINTED BY ANY OF MY CHOICES. I LIKE MY FOOD VERY SPICY, BUT MY HUSBAND DOES NOT, BUT WE WERE BOTH HAPPY AS THE MENU IS MARKED TO SHOW MILD , MEDIUM AND HOT DISHES TO HELP YOU CHOOSE YOUR MEAL.
