Tailored Menu in the wine room at Taj Exotica: Private Dining

by LisaMJ

I was lucky enough to be given a wonderful surprise dinner by my husband. Taj Exotica has several Private Dining Experiences available, and I had commented that I'd like to see the wine room. One evening, expecting to dine in the main restaurant, we arrived at the bar for Martinis, and had our usual chat with Rajan, the bar manager. As we got up to go to dinner, Rajan invited me to look at the wine room. Great, I thought. The room is great, white washed rough stone walls, candles slots, with an amazing medieval feel to it. There was a table set out, beautifully presented with candles and beaded placemats. I didn't want to be so rude as to immediately assume it was for me, so I glanced around the wine room until the look on my husbands face meant this was all set up for us.2 scrolls, tied with gold twine, with burnt edges were on the table, titled "Dinner in the Wine Room - Personalised...

24 Degrees, Taj Exotica, Maldives: Curries & Desserts!

by LisaMJ

The first night we arrived, I ordered the homestyle chicken curry and rice. I expected to receive one plate with a serving of chicken curry and rice, but my my I was wrong. An empty plate was placed in front of me. One waiter served rice onto my plate, another approached with the curry and served me. The the first waiter returned with a lentil dahl. Then a bowl of nan. Then 2 spicy popadums, then a pretty platter with mango chutney and pickles. All of the above was squeezed onto the table, and each time I reached to serve myself (happlily) some more rice or curry, one of the waiters would quickly stop me, take the bowl and say 'No Maam, let me do that for you'. They really did treat you like royalty, add to that the fantastic curry and I was happy as Larry. The duet of chocolate parfaits was so beautifully presented that I photographed it. The smug look on y husbands face is actually...

24 Degrees. Taj Exotica, Maldives: Curry to die for! (If there is such a thing!)

by LisaMJ

This restaurant is the more casual of the 2, although it is by no means casual if that makes sense! The restaurant is open air, with a lower and upper tier, and intricate vaulted ceiling. The floor is a mix of marble and dark polished wood. It serves a pan-Asian & International fayre, the food was ALWAYS excellent, with service that would be hard to beat. All meals were always beautifuly presented. In additions to the menus, you could have asked for anything and they would prepare it for you.As soon as you sat to breakfast a bowl of breads and pastries with butter & preserves was placed on the table. The menu consited of things such as, eggs any style with sausage, bacon, basil topped tomatoes, herb focaccia. Omelettes with a number of filling. Egg white only omlette with roma tomatoes and basil (there were always several 'healthy options' at all meals). Banana hot cakes, with cream & wild...

On the beach: Don't miss it!

by BarbaraForza

Easy to reach by boat, no booking required, dress comfortably, enjoy the atmosphere...the pic shows this particular "restaurant" I had the pleasure to eat at in the moon light... Fresh fish was served sitting on the beach on comfortable green leaves, drinking from coconuts' mugs and other local food...dancing barefoot on the sand following...

Coffee Shop - Machchafushi: No banana's in Machchafushi today!!!!!!!!!

by elmasri

If you're lucky you may have banana's on your fruit plate everyday, unlike me who was told more than once that they didn't have banana's!!!!?????!!!!!No banana's in the maldives?????It's ridiculous! It's like saying that The Netherlands ran out of tulips... No favourites. Spaguetti alio olio and the omelette were the only two decent dishes on the menu. Banana milkshake (when they had bananas) was literally banana flavoured milk. Oh I forgot the Pineapple juice was good... Sad, very sad!

Dhonveli Restaurant: Prepare to gain a few pounds!

by NatalieDonnan

The Dhonveli Restaurant is very intimate and cool with beautiful decor and natural sand floors to dig your feet into as you eat. Meals on Veligandu are always served buffet style apart from one night a week when it is a la carte. There is a massive selection of salads, vegtables, meats and fish and you definately will get a meal to suit even the fussiest eaters. There are also vegetarian options available. The curries and the Tomato and Garlic Soup were my favourite!I am not a 'desert person' but on Veligandu I had a desert twice daily. They are scrumptous! Lots of little cakes and fresh fruit, even jelly and ice cream sometimes. Make sure you eat your jelly and ice cream on your way back to your table or it could well have already melted, as i found out! The service is great and the air conditioning makes eating very comfortable on those hot maldivian nights. Every type of curry,...

Sun Star: A romantic place over the ocean

by Gard

There are basically two other restaurants on the island apart from the Maaniya restaurant where we had our buffet meals. On the jetty where we first arrived is an Italian restaurant called Alpontile and on the opposite side of the island (outside the water bungalows) you can find a place called Sun Star and they serve Thai and Chinese food. The location of the resturant is quite nice. It is located at the very end of the jetty that goes out to the water bungalows. The resturant has no walls so you can hear and smell the ocean outside. We tried Sun Star one evening and it was a nice meal. We like the Thai cuisine and it was nice to have tom yam goong soup, chicken in green curry and grilled fish. But I have to admit that i got a bit hot...the temperature was high and the food was hot an spicy. If you want to go to the Italian restaurant or the Thai restaurant you can just notify the desk...

The Maaniya restaurant: A great selection of food

by Gard

All the main meals are served in the Maaniya restaurant (for those who are on Sun Island on an all inclusive stay and stay in Deluxe and Super Deluxe bungalows) located near the lobby. When we walked in there the first time we got placed at a certain table and this is where we sat during our meals during our entire stay and we had one designated waiter. The food in the Maaniya restaurant is based on a buffet style meal and the selection of food was excellent. For breakfast (served from 7.30 am to 9.30 am) we had a great selection of cereals, bread, muffins, rolls, fruit, toast, eggs any way you want them, beans, bacon?well, due to the fact the this is a Muslim country we only got beef bacon :-) For lunch and dinner (from 12.30 to 2 pm and from 7.30 pm to 9 pm) there was a great selection of soups, salads, pasta, meat, fish and lots of sweet stuff for dessert. During our stay we didn?t...

No problem for vegetarians

by steveandmich

We only ate in the water village restaurant ( only because the rep advised us not to bother on the island ) and found that the informal buffet style suited us.As vegetarians there was always plenty of great food but they also offered to cook us something else if the buffet was not to our liking ( which it never was ). The waiters/waitresses were great, always cheerful and attentive. The curries and salads were particular favourites.
