by LisaMJ There is some great snorkelling to be done in the Maldives, in all the countries we have visited, we saw by far the most amount of underwater life in the Maldives. A couple of pictures below in my travelogue will be added. I feel it's much better to have your own snorelling gear. Even though you can borrow it, and it's disinfected, the snorkel will still have been in a number of peoples mouths before you! Plus, masks can be quite unique so get your own one which fits well. Mine is a prescription mask which is a good idea, because some days I didn't always want to put my contact lenses in to use with my regular mask. Leave a Comment Theme: Beach Activities

The snorkelling in the Maldives is fantastic. At Kuramathi you will find it easy to access the inner reef directly from the beach. At high tide, it is possible to snorkel out over the top of the reef to the outer reef. At the Sandbank snorkel channel, the reef has a really great drop and at high tide you get larger fish coming in closer. There are also schools of triggerfish and chromis at the outer reef which you won't see at the inner reef.
If you are a keen snorkeller and don't already have your own gear, do give some consideration to purchasing in advance, especially if you are not on an all inclusive package to the Maldives. The cost of the hire for the week will almost be the cost of purchasing your own equipment. Of course, after each use in the sea, be sure to give it a good rinse off in fresh water to help keep it in good condition. Baby Sharks in the Maldives by LisaMJ There are lots of baby sharks in the Maldives. We went snorkelling with them, and at first they were very nervous and swam away from us quickly, but after a while we were quite interesting to them it seems, and they came quite close. The underwater shots show how close! They are harmless by the way! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by FletteMette I've written a "things to do" tip on snorkelling, but here I'll add a bit more info about equipment & such, for those of you who haven't snorkelled (much) before... :o) I'm not at all an expert, but I have snorkelled quite a bit, and I do love snorkelling. Most (if not all!) resorts in the Maldives will have snorkelling gear for rent - some have gear available for free to their all-inclusive guests. Renting can get very expensive, it might very well be cheaper to buy your own gear if you plan to do a bit of snorkelling. I have got my own snorkelling mask, snorkel and fins, and I much prefer having my own - the mask fits perfectly, and I don't have to use a snorkel that hundreds of other people have had in their mouths! I would recommend buying gear *before* travelling to the Maldives - it will most likely be quite a bit cheaper, and the selection bigger.
If you want to enjoy the snorkelling, the gear really is very important - the mask should fit properly, so that it doesn't leak. How to choose a mask: Hold the mask against your face, it should fit comfortably around your nose and eyes. Inhale through your nose - the vacuum you create inside the mask should hold the mask quite firmly against your face when you take your hand away. If it doesn't, it will leak when you're in the water - you don't want that, so get another mask that actually fits... :o) Ask the staff if you're not sure - they *should* help you! The snorkel should have a purge valve at the bottom - the purge valve makes the snorkel a lot easier to clear when it's flooded by a wave. I would not buy the "mask & snorkel" packs you'll find in any supermarket, toy store or souvenir shop - the masks are wrapped in plastic and you can't try them on, so you won't know if it actually fits, and many of these masks aren't made of silicone but pvc - silicone is softer and more comfortable, and it stays soft. why oh why do the fish gods punish me? i was so excited to go deep sea fishing, as was steven, my ssiter's fiance. we were hanging out for it, hoping to catch ourselves some awesome fish. just the day before, we had heard that an austrian boy had caught a 40kg sailfish, and the very morning of the afternoon we went out, some huge tuna had been caught as well. so we went out full of hope, and as the hours ticked by, the hope slowly faded away, and our moods slowly detoriated too. i thought i had a bite at one stage, jumped out of my bored stupor, ran to the reel, but it was nothing... i had snagged steven's hook! haha. well i haha now, but at the time, i was soooo devo (devastated to the unitiated). so after 5 hours at sea, and a nap inbetween on the decks of the boat, me and steven limped back onto the jetty, with nothing to show. the big jokes of the club med resort that day we were. the only people for ages who hadnt caught a fish. US$200 and not one bloody fish to show for it, not one! im still crushed by it! Leave a Comment Theme: Fishing Trips

snorkelling tour to "the wreck" by DOUGALSMUM If the idea of lying on a beach all day bores you sensless then kuredu is the island for you. Not only is there an excellent 5 star padi scuba diving school- which also offers snorkelling lessons and an array of different snorkelling tours, but there is also the excellent H20 water sports centre where you can learn to windsurf, water ski, wakeboard, catamaran sail, go on banana rides- hire canoes etc etc..... you get my drift YOU WILL NOT BE BORED, if you are really lucky you will get the inimitable Zoran to teach you- he is a real larger than life character- you will know him when you see him.
All equipement can be hired in resort, there is no need to lug anything half way around the world! Leave a Comment Theme: Beach ActivitiesAddress: kuredu resortDirections: dive centre on the main street behind H20 on the beach by the main jetty

Why is diving so special in the Maldives? Well the picture says it all. I think more than anything else you rarely come across other dive groups when you're out in the blue. Alas, this time we had to share the scene with another group - but there is room for everyone! If you want to learn to dive in the Maldives I recommend staying in a cheap hotel in Male' (there are plenty at approx. $50 per night) and learn at one of the local dive schools. Way cheaper than the over-priced resorts! Though the teaching quality is not quite up to par. However, safety still rules.
Resorts and dive schools in Male' have all the equipment you need, but if you have it already bring your mask/fins and wet suit (for the Maldives I recommend full-length wetsuit - 5mm (watch out for the currents that can knock you as unwilling as you are against painful corals)...and let's not forget the damage you could cause the precious coral! Leave a Comment Theme: Scuba DivingDirections: Paradise Manta point - near Himmafushi, close to Male'. My dive school is Maldivers, run fully by a Maldivian crew - great fun! and very safe at good value. If you're passing through Male' this is probably the best deals for diving in the country.Website: www.maldivers.net Other Contact: saltwaterpeople.blogspot.com

Whatever ur certificate is, either u have done 5 times or hundred times of diving, u should go for the "matriculation" class first. It's good to refresh ur memory but they charge u the same 50 USD like normal diving! And of course it's only in the house reef where u see nothing spectacular whatsoever. Mask clearing, buddy breathing, etc...were on the "curriculum". Good to know that the next dive was good! I saw Manta Rays! Visibility was good, water was warm too.
U can always rent the equipment if u don't bring any. And if u do, it cost u less 5 USD only. Leave a Comment Theme: Scuba Diving
