Visit another resort: Meeru

by Myndo

What a difference to "our" island Helengeli! While we had a very small island with few (well, 50) Bungalows, here you find the touristic Resort par excellence. They have Standard Rooms (like in Motels), Land Villas (not at the beach), Jacuzzi Villas (also not at the beach), Water Villas (at the beach), Jacuzzi Water Villas (directly into the sea) and even a honeymoon Villa (very separated in the sea, only accessible by boat). They have the same spa as we on Helengeli (Dunije Spa), only several sizes bigger.Dive Center of course (but they have to drive further to dive at good sites).Excursions, excursions ...Evenings there is Entertainment like disco etc.Lots of Restaurants, Bars ...What I did not find so good here is that they don't have access from the beach to a reef where you can go snorkeling. They did make an artificial reef where the water Villas are and you can see sharks and...

Visit an island of the locals

by Myndo

Another excursion (or part of one) should be a visit to an island, where the locals live.We did it during our island hopping, visiting the island next to the big resort of Meeru (North Male atoll).Quite a contrast to see first one of the maybe biggest touristic resorts and then the island where the locals live. Those who do not work in the touristic industry, are fishing. The island looked quite deserted during our visit, which I also contributed to the fact, that it was around high noon and the sun burning down so hot, that the only people stupid enough to walk around in that heat, must be tourists. That we had to wear long sleeves and trousers (well the woman at least, this is a muslimic country, remember?) did not help much. What is there to see?A graveyard that was not really recognizable as such for us, because of the lack of flowers, headstones etc. Generally it looked like a mural...

Dolphin watching

by Myndo

All the island resorts will offer excursions. One of them is the dolphin watching at sunset. We really enjoyed the trip on the Dhoni (the slower boats). They did not even have to drive very far, because Helengeli, the island we stayed on, was close to the outer reef, where you can find a lot of them.Dolphins are quite curious, so we came quite close to them (or they to us). They also show off doing jummps and saltos or heading the boat.A good advice is to have a camera that has not - like the normal digital cameras- a time delay from when you push the button until it makes the picture. Else if you will have a lot of pictures just showing the waves and the water and maybe a splash - where the dolphin you intended to take a picture of just jumped. We had our underwater camera with us, but that was a poor substitution.

Snorkeling or diving?

by Myndo

One of the most important reasons people are visiting the Maldives is -next to the beaches and the sun- the ocean. Diving is a synonym for the Maldives. Now - should you also visit, if you don't dive? I think so. Being pregnant, when I went there. I was "forced" to stay at the surface of the water (read: snorkeling). But I was not disappointed. You can see a lot there, too- I did not miss anything. Turtles, Sharks, Mantas (yes), Stingrays ...Don't forget to take one of these underwater cameras with you. Nobody will else believe, what you did see...To take Snorkeling gear with you is not really necessary, you can rent it on most islands that have accomodations. Many islands also offer dive courses. Look that you have a reliable dive center (with PADI certificate).

FEEDING TIME!

by DAO

Every night at 6:30 pm, the staff at White Sands Resort feed the giant Stingrays. The large black monsters of the sea begin to circle the main pier each night just before the event begins. On the best night I counted 9 including one that no longer had a tail. One of the staff, with heavy rubber gloves, feeds pieces of chicken to the round black shadows lurking around the posts. Every once in a while there is a brief fight for position. After the food has been distributed, the Stingrays melt away again until tomorrow night

Combine Maldives with another destination

by Flem2002

The first week was great - sun, sun, sun, sun, relax, read, pool, sun, eat .... but into the second week we started to get a tad fed up of the unrelenting, predictable heat and the confines of the resort. People were arriving who had already had a week in Sri lanka, or a weekend stop over in Dubai, and my biggest regret is that I didn't think of doing this too.Don't get me wrong - I love the sun and having little to do except eat, sleep and read - but I'd never experienced it before where I had no escape! In the Caribbean, you can at least have day trips to towns, Cities, volcanos etc, but in the Maldives, the only excursions are to other tiny, quiet stretches of sand with blistering heat. If you're going a distance to the Maldives, you will probably be satisfied with one week and I'd recommend that you combine it with something more contrasting as a stop over on your way there or back.

BUY A DISPOSABLE UNDERWATER CAMERA

by DAO

Want a cheap (relatively) and fun experience? Buy yourself a disposable underwater camera. Every resort sells them, or you can pick up one before you go. If you go scuba diving, only use them at about 10 meters are less, as there is not enough light to get great pictures. If you want too use them to take pictures just snorkelling around the resort beach, avoid lots of sand and seaweed as you will not get good shots. I found some rocks near an underwater tank one of the restaurants uses to hold live lobsters and had a clear view of colourful fish. Unfortunately I had already used the film up. Go for it, you already spent a lot of money to get here, might as well get some good underwater pictures!

Local Villages

by GlobeTrottin

Head to a local village. If you're at the resort to just relax-feel free. But if you want a small trip off the island, heading to a local village is certainly worth it.The guides are charming. We went to visit the local schools, the small hotel, the community recreational facility, the 'famous' local football stars, the dhoni-builders, and charming people.

BAT WATCHING

by DAO

Its a bird, no its a plane no its.... a Fruit BatFrom a distance they look and fly like large birds. They eat a kind of red fruit that will make humans ill. They are fairly docile and will let you get fairly close. At night you can hear them calling to each other.
