The flight from Mali to whatever Island you are staying at is very unreliable. They may tell you the plane is not available but it is most likely there were not enough people to make it cost effective. They then put you on a boat, bummer.
Not something I write from first hand experience but I undestand that the locals in Male sell turtle meat on the streets. Because turtles can seal their blood vessels, bits can be chopped off over a long period of time, thus the meat is always fresh. Therefore, the turtle is a living bloody mass for days on end.
Some tourists are obviously horrified by this and often pay to rescue the turtles from what is in store for them. It sounds cruel but don't pay any money to the people who offer to sell the turtle to you.
The turtle is released, much to the relief of the purchaser, only to be caught again 5 mins after the purchaser has walked away. It's simply a viscious circle. The turtle is caught again and they simply wait for the next distressed tourist to come along.
When visiting the capital Malé do not feel obliged to accept the tour or guides provided by the resort or the shops suggested by the guides. However be aware that they will pester you until you accept their help.
I didn't want one at first but because I was on my own I finally accepted to go with one on my terms. I told him I wanted to go into shops I wanted and not the ones he wanted. No need to say that after an hour he was a bit fed up with me. He wanted to carry my bags and I told him that carrying the bags is all the fun of going shopping. He wanted to take me into shops on the first floor and I didn't because once you are inside they close the door and pester you until you buy something. So when I saw we were returning to the port and I spotted a shopping centre I paid him and thanked him. I could see that he was pleased to go.
Never pay the price they ask. You can go to half the price or less sometimes if you buy lots of things. I got a lovely handbag for $5 which started at the asking price of $20. I bough a handmade mirror for $15 which was $35, so the bag was reduced to match my $20 bill. Never show all your money. If you only have $10 they will accept your price, better $10 than nothing.
The same applies to jewelery. I saw a platinum and 1.5k diamonds ring at the asking price of $3000 and after putting it on my finger twice it was reduced to $2100 if I had more time I would have got it at my asking price of £1000 but I spotted the shop too late, 10 minutes before I was due to get into the boat back to the resort, so I had to leave taking back with me the dream... It's no.1 on my shopping list if I go there again...
Male. Nothing much to see. The fish market is ok. Lots of tourist shops who won't let you leave withour buying something.
Male is is only a mile square.
Don't bother unless you're really boared or need some cheapo souviners
Service can be a lot improved in Villivaru !!!!
I mean, it's not a matter of how local people work cause they work really well ... I just think the management of the island is driving this way.
Anyhow this happened only once ...
Unique Suggestions: Try ur best to keep urself the island clean and comfortable.
Fun Alternatives: Eat in the restaurant ? :-)))))
I can't think of any traps we fell into, the Maldivians are generally VERY HONEST people. They will search for you for days to return something worthless that you have dropped. Fantastic people and no crime as such to talk about.
Maldives is a heaven for romance, and a nice place for family vacation too. I stayed in Paradise Island last time. There is a big resort on that island with completed facilities, providing all the convenience you want. Price of everything (from hotel to food)on Maldives islands are high. But the beautiful atol scenery are definitely worth of visitng, at least once. Have a good time.
In Club Med Kani I recommend standard beach bungalows from room number 220 to 250. Deluxe Villa and Water Bungalows very highly overrated and two story buildings are not interesting, and the eastern side of the island is not prefferred for the beach because it is windy and shallow. Deluxe Beach Villa has non-working Jakuzzi. It is a shame that Club Med using this feature in their web site as part of advertisement. Avoid Water Bungalows: Strong Current Warning Sign Put by Club Med, Baby sharks a lot, water so shallow you can not jump, swim. Only walk.
Unique Suggestions: It's a must do activity, if only once. The fish don't exactly jump onto the hooks, but most people pull something out of the water.
Mine was too small to keep, so was returned to live another day.
Dhiffushi Island is just a 10 minute journey by Dhoni. Well worth a couple of hours to see how locals live. It's only a small island, you can cross to the other side in a minute. It's an island you can see all the day and just have to visit.
Unique Suggestions: Have a look around the souvenir shops. There's 3 to choose from, all selling the same things. It's up to you to decide a price!
Why not picturing your baggage before leaving ? In case they loose it, you can simply show the picture, instead of filling in the standard description gorm at the airport.
TRIP TO MALE (THE CAPITAL)BIT OF A WASTE OF TIME AS NOTHING TO SEE OF ANY INTEREST.Lots of religious buildings if your into that kind of thing.
Pic:A ten minute storm heading our way.
Unique Suggestions: Some catch bigger fry than others. Your catch can be reserved and cooked for your Dinner Table for a small charge.
Ok, u don't have to pay for this but it is a trap !!!! do u expect such a kind of kitsch meadows at the Maldives ?
When visiting Maldives, in spite of what some people say, a day trip to Male (the capital city)is not a real tourist trap. But don't miss the fishmarket and avoid the souvenirs shops...
