Don’t ever even think of...

by babx

Don’t ever even think of phoning home! The only way to do this is using satellite phone which is very very expensive…try asking at the reception: they let me use their internet connection to send some emails at a very low price.

Probably you will go for a day trip in a tipical fishermen village...it's a good trip but when you get off the boat you'll be surrounded by people wanting to sell you anything...just try to avoid them and go on and have a look at the village...if you want to buy something do it just before going back to the boat: you'll get a better price because you are nearly leaving and rather than selling nothing they will give you their best price

by millward

when waiting for your boat at the airport, you will be tempted to buy a coke or beer be warned a small coke will cost you 4 dollars..you will find you will not wait long for your boat.also think twice before taking a day trip to Male..its not that pleasant, with thousands of mopeds and taxi's and people trying to be your 'guide'..there are not many interesting sights on Male unless you like fish markets and tacky tourist shops.there is a nice mosque to see, and the action around the harbour is interesting....spend your time on your lovely tourist island, or better still visit a small 'local' island.

by mlloyd

The flight from Mali to whatever Island you are staying at is very unreliable. They may tell you the plane is not available but it is most likely there were not enough people to make it cost effective. They then put you on a boat, bummer.

BOATS & DAYTRIPSIf you don't wanna spend all your money in expensive excursions organized by your resort, go one day to Male and ask local fishermen about the possibility of hiring their boat for a day. You can go fishing, island hopping, and know some isolated islands where tourists don't use to go normally...

Not something I write from...

by DellyM

Not something I write from first hand experience but I undestand that the locals in Male sell turtle meat on the streets. Because turtles can seal their blood vessels, bits can be chopped off over a long period of time, thus the meat is always fresh. Therefore, the turtle is a living bloody mass for days on end. Some tourists are obviously horrified by this and often pay to rescue the turtles from what is in store for them. It sounds cruel but don't pay any money to the people who offer to sell the turtle to you.The turtle is released, much to the relief of the purchaser, only to be caught again 5 mins after the purchaser has walked away. It's simply a viscious circle. The turtle is caught again and they simply wait for the next distressed tourist to come along.

When visiting the capital Malé...

by elmasri

When visiting the capital Malé do not feel obliged to accept the tour or guides provided by the resort or the shops suggested by the guides. However be aware that they will pester you until you accept their help. I didn't want one at first but because I was on my own I finally accepted to go with one on my terms. I told him I wanted to go into shops I wanted and not the ones he wanted. No need to say that after an hour he was a bit fed up with me. He wanted to carry my bags and I told him that carrying the bags is all the fun of going shopping. He wanted to take me into shops on the first floor and I didn't because once you are inside they close the door and pester you until you buy something. So when I saw we were returning to the port and I spotted a shopping centre I paid him and thanked him. I could see that he was pleased to go. Never pay the price they ask. You can go to half the...
