Dhonis and speeedboats

by call_me_rhia

Dhonis are the (modified) traditional Maldivian vessels. They are quite slow so they are only used for short distances: to go from the airport to Male, or in the resorts to go on day trips to nearby islands. Speedboats are used for transportation from the airport and your resort. Some are as big as yatchs!

Speed Boats

by fashionapple

Speed Boats are the other option available for transportation in Maldives. Most of resorts have their own speed boats for tranfers of guests.Usually speed boats fare are expensive then that of dhoni. For just 15 minute speed boat ride to Giravaru resort from Maale they charge $75. Same is the case with other resorts.

Dhoni

Main mode of transportation in Maldives is by local boats called "Dhoni". From airport to Maale its fare is 10 Ruffiya per person. Its cheap and widley popular amoung Maldivians.Sea could be very rough and Dhoni could be very uncomfortable so incase you are sick or ill then I would not recommend you to use it.These days especially sea is very rough and dhoni trip could faint you for some time so be aware ;-)

Take your camera in your hand luggage

by LisaMJ

As we left Duba for the Maldives at 0345, a couple of hours later, we were lucky enough to witness this amazing sunrise in the distance. So, it's a good idea to have your camera handy to capture moments such as these (as well as the islands as you arrive as shown above).

Dubai Airport

by LisaMJ

We flew Emirates via Dubai. The flight from LHR to DXB was around 6 1/2 hours, and then the flight from Dubai to Male was about 4 hours.I was glad for the break, and there is so much to do at Dubai airport, so you won't be bored, waiting around for your flight.Upon check in at Heathrow, you are given your boarding pass for both legs of the journey. When you arrive in Dubai, you take the 'in transit' route, and go straight into the shopping area/departure lounge. So easy, and you don't have to worry about your luggage, as it's all taken care of.If flying economy, I'd recommend taking a flight via somewhere, as you get to stretch your legs for a couple of hours, AND do some great shopping.

Maldivian Air Taxis

by Ali&Steve

Just some info for people about to visit the Maldives and who will be transferring from Male to their island by seaplane:1.The excess baggage charge with Maldivian Air Taxis is USD 2 per kilo in excess of 25 kg. That charge covers both outbound and inbound trips. Your hand luggage will also be weighed. So, if you make use of, for example, the Emirates 10 kg free extra allowance for scuba equipment, expect to have to pay USD 10+ (depending on hand baggage weight) when checking in at the seaplane terminal. It still pays to take your dive kit as the excess baggage charge is much cheaper than renting kit at your destination.2.Maldivian Air Taxis currently have maintenance problems with aircraft that has impacted on their schedules. Do not be surprised if you suffer a 3 hour+ wait at the seaplane terminal (a bit annoying as our flight from Dubai was only 4 hours).3.If you want to take...

Flying

by mauro_pd

Of course u need a flight to Male' International Airport (more info @ www.airports.com.mv) and I've choosen a Condor one (www.condor.de, Condor is the 'charter' company of Lufthansa) from FFurt (in 2004 it was LTU).Then, depending which island u r targeting, u probably need a boat (better if it is a 'speedboat') to reach your target. The boat can be booked from one of the kiosks u can see just exiting the airport but it's really better if u go there with everything already settled by a tour operator.Pic courtesy from www.airports.com.mv.Walking ... sailing ... swimming ... diving ...

Don't Doni

by reeley

If you can - go by seaplane, if you can't then go by speedboat. The only alternative then left is the Doni. Believe me they are uncomfortable with wooden benches for seats - no padding for your bottom! They often have smelly engines with fumes that linger and can you imagine several hours of transfer time under those conditions? Look, this is a holiday not purgatory, don't doni !!

Great ride in a seaplane

by Gard

When we bought the package we decided to go for a 30 minute sea plane ride instead of the 2 1/2 hours boat ride to get to Sun Island. The small bus took us on a 5 minute ride from the arrival hall at the airport (we actually drove across the air strip itself) to the base of Trans Maldivian Airways (http://www.tma.com.mv/). We checked in our baggage at the tiny terminal and we had to wait a little bit before our plane would take of. We looked around us in the departure hall and the people there were not like we had expected. I guess we had pictured that only honeymooners go to the Maldives but around us were people of different ages and there were also quite a lot of families. At about 11 am it was time to board the DeHavilland Twin Otter sea plane. It was our first time in a sea plane so we were of course excited. It was a bit funny looking at the sea planes that came in with tourist..it...

Chuck way those car keys..

by Custodyspice

As far as Im aware the only island with cars is the Capital, Male. The owner of our island once told us he used to get excited about driving in England because once he hit 60mph he didnt have to hit his brakes to stop himself from driving off the end of the island.
