Ari Beach can be reached from...

by anglosaxon

Ari Beach can be reached from England with an excrutiatingly long charter flight from London via a middle east stop and onto Male (Maldives Capital). Be careful of the Ramadan festival as Maldives is predominantly Moslem and so is the Middle East. Flights can be severely disrupted. From there either a fast boat or helicopter will take you to the resort. Ari is to the south of the Islands and about twenty mins flying time on 'hummingbird airways'. Are you kidding, you could walk around the whole island in 45 minutes. Island hopping is best by speed boat

Well you ain't gonna need a car while you're in Maldives! Though there are a lot of cars in Male, the capital, these are more for show than for necessity. All of the islands are small enough to walk to wherever you want to go.To get from one island to the other boats are essential, Dhoanis (traditional Maldive craft) for short journeys, speed boats for longer trips and seaplanes or helicopters for the longest trips. Each resort island has a fleet of vessels of various types for excursions, fishing, diving and snorkelling trips.

By Plane from the UK you can use the following operators:Air 2000 (who we travelled with, excellent!)Air LankaEmirates AirAirtours InternationalMonarch AirlinesAir 2000, Monarch and Airtours fly via Bahrain, Emirates via Dubai and Air Lanka via Columbo (in Sri Lanka). Most flights are from London Gatwick on Sunday, returning from Male on Monday, but there are also some flights from Manchester. From Germany there are flights by LTU (from Hannover) and from Italy with Lauda (from Malpensa).

Unless you're on a cruise or something it's highly likely that you'll arrive in Maldives by air. The airport is on an island all of it's own called Hulhule, and that's about 1 or 2km from Male, the capital of maldives. There is nothing on Hulhule except the airport and it's associated services, so to get to where you are going you will transfer by boat, seaplane or even another jet, depending on where your final destination is.As a first-time flyer you can no doubt imagine just how thrilled I was to see that the plane was going to land on what looks like an Aircraft Carrier. Especially so because the plane flew right over the airport and then banked steeply round to approach from the opposite direction (the picture is taken while it is banking). Then it suddenly drops down to the runway, and all you can see on each side is the sea, and you hope there is runway below. As the plane thumps...

Think in planes and boats...

by dtamas

Probably the only comfortable way to get to the Maldives is by airplane. There are regular filghts from Colombo (Sri Lanka), and many other cities of the world. Since there's water around every island, think in dhonis, motorboats, and hydroplanes. It is likely that you'll be tied to the schedule of the boats of the island of your choice.

The best way is by air of course. There are many ways to travel between islands. The slowest andgentlest way is by Dhoni which is the craft used by Maldiviansfor fishing etc.The more high-tech way is by speed launch/boat.Faster still, is by sea plane or air to some of the islands with airportsalthough sea planes dont need airports.Male(the capital island) has numerous taxisand one can easily walk around particularly in the mornings and lateevenings.

By plane - 11 hours direct flight with Monarch. The flight was full so not much chance of getting a window seat, which was a shame. I was particularly upset because some of the people on window seats were reading newspapers and not even looking at the beautiful scenery on taking off from the Maldives. These people should not be allowed to get window seats...By Boat (speed boats or Dhonis) or Sea Planes

Fly Singapore Airlines, Air Lanka, etc. All land on an island that accommodates the airport. Pretty interesting to look out the window as you approach. On arrival, you head to your resort island by 'dhoni' or local motor launch. It's a great intro to the country.boat or swim the several miles from island to island. However, there aren't many reasons to visit other resorts unless they have particular things of interest or you have a friend there. In Male, the capital, you can walk everywhere.
