Make sure you wash your ears in fresh water after snorkelling or diving otherwise the plankton can cause painful ear infection. A couple of people had this when we were there and they were very uncomfortable. We however made sure we washed ears religiously and had no problems whatsoever! Take some cotton buds with you also! Remember that whilst you may be on a remote island in the middle of the Indian Ocean you will encounter big bugs. Our outside bathroom was frequented by giant ants - they didn't cause us a problem but there were a quite a few of them around. We had the unfortunate experience of a close encounter with "big" cockroaches - roughly 8cm in size. Be warned do not squash them. We learnt after the event that when squashed they emit an odour which attracts other cockroaches! On the friendlier side were the geckos and chameleon - we found lots of these frequenting the resort. June and July are the monsoon periods. It rained all 5 days I was there! :( The stormy conditions also meant that a number of activities such as sunset fishing or snorkelling were cancelled. If you must go around that period, at least stay longer and see if you can catch the sun out once in a blue moon. Dec/Jan remain the most popular season for good reasons. Book in advance! Due to the humid climate, there is considerable risk of damage to leather goods, woolens, films and books. Mold is quick to form. So airing articles in the sun, storing them in air-conditioned rooms or in cupboards will keep damage to a minimum. Another danger: Coconuts falling on your head! And you changing your name to Robinson Cruzu and never going back! (I believe it has happened to a few so watch out!) :) Prohibited by law to bring alcohol into Maldives because it is an Islamic republic. However, alcoholic beverages are legally available to tourists on resort islands!! Leave a Comment

This is not so much a warning/danger for you as for the Maldivian environment. The disposal of waste material is a big problem in Maldives island. You can help against that kind of problems by taking home your own rubbish like empty plastic bottles, empty aerosol bombs, plastic shopping bags and so on. Leave a Comment

Once during my stay, I decided that while my girlfriend was sunbathing, I would go out and snorkal on my own. It seemed like a good idea, as she doesnt really like snorkelling. Anyway, as she was sunbathing outside our room on the water bungalow side of the island, thats where I took my snorkelling. I went out quite a bit, and it was still quite shallow, but then I began to notice how strong the current really was. It got to the point where while i was afloat ontop of a coral, the current was too strong to even swim against. I had to end up letting it pull me away from the reef, so i could put my feet down, and struggle to walk back to the shore. The danger of doing this also was, while I had to walk, I had to avoid the sharp corals and rocks that were plentiful on that part of the island. Leave a Comment

Before I visited the Maldives I was convinced I was going to get eaten by Sharks! So I surfed the net before I went and found out that that more people are injured or killed by falling coconuts than sharks in the world - not just the Maldives. Well my first thought was fine - I wont sit under any coconut trees and I will be fine! The whole island had a canopy of coconut trees, you hear a snap, a crack, a woosh and then a bang as it hits the floor. You hear this a few times through the day and night - I urge you BE CAREFUL under those trees. Leave a Comment

The strict laws of Customs on the Maldives prohibit the importation of pornographic material (that does also mean nude or semi nude pictures on magazines such as cosmopolitan), firearms, alcohol and illegal drugs (also marijuana) into the country. Exports of coral, shells and other object removed from the marine environment is also prohibited. (see my tip on tourist traps) The Maldives are a muslimic country and as such they do not drink alcohol - nor are you allowed to bring alcohol with you, when you enter. If you do and they catch you, they will at least take it away from you (I saw that happen). They can also send you to jail for this, so don't try it. You will find enough alcohol in the touristic resorts - although for a high price. Leave a Comment
