Transfer by speed boat

by tolovajka

From Male airport the resort can be approached by sea plane or speed boat. If you suffer form seasickness DO NOT take the speed boat! I don't suffer from it, but I must say that the boat transfer was really awful and I couldn't have survive without the Travelgum (=remedy for car- and seasickness).

Sunburn

by LittleDee

Make sure you wear high factor suncream and apply it regularly because the sun is very intense due to the island being very close to the equator. We spent a lot of time in the shade under the palm trees and still came home with a decent tan.

Coral rash

by LittleDee

Be careful you don't accidentally scrape any part of your body against the coral. Not only will you damage the coral but it will also leave you with a nasty rash which gets very tender and sore for a couple of days.

Bright Sands

by Conflictrealms

When I went to the Maldives, I was lucky to take a pair of sunglasses. My girlfriend however, didn't. It isnt much of a worry before noon, but once it hits 12, and your walking down the beach, the white sands reflect so much light, making you have to squint your eyes as you walk. But then, on the other hand, you have to be careful not to get an outline tan, if wearing sunglasses!

The Current

by Conflictrealms

Once during my stay, I decided that while my girlfriend was sunbathing, I would go out and snorkal on my own. It seemed like a good idea, as she doesnt really like snorkelling.Anyway, as she was sunbathing outside our room on the water bungalow side of the island, thats where I took my snorkelling. I went out quite a bit, and it was still quite shallow, but then I began to notice how strong the current really was.It got to the point where while i was afloat ontop of a coral, the current was too strong to even swim against. I had to end up letting it pull me away from the reef, so i could put my feet down, and struggle to walk back to the shore. The danger of doing this also was, while I had to walk, I had to avoid the sharp corals and rocks that were plentiful on that part of the island.

Careful of the Sun

by Conflictrealms

Before the Maldives, I hardly ever used Sun protection cream. I know I should, but I never. When I went to the Maldives however, I decided to take a Factor 20. After aplying it everywhere, I walked down the beach and back...It took in total about half hour. THen i tok a dive in the sea...anyway, a few hours after, i noticed that I was already burnt. I was really suprised how strong the sun was. Its much stronger then I thought.the next night, I had that horrible itching due to excessive sun exposure. I didnt even think i was in the sun too much and i kept out of it completly from 12-2pm.Anyway, after that, I went into the gift shop and brought a factor 30. I still also tried staying out of the sun as much as i could. The photo shows how much i burnt on the first day, using factor 20 sun block.

Rocky and Coral Waters

by Conflictrealms

If staying in Sun Island, be careful of swimming on the Water Bungalow side of the Island. It is full of coral, and rocks. Unfortunatly, while being full of coral, you would expect it to be beautiful under the water. Though infact, when i tried snorkelling, it was mostly the abandoned, and dead coral. You will of course come across some beautiful spots... Just be careful where you tread, especially when shore walking!

Website information - often out of date!

by nakatcha

I know you are getting (hopefully) up to date information from VT members, but if you also look at Websites for information please get anything crucial confirmed by the island before going - many of the websites are very out of date with their information and if you go by the pictures/descriptions on some of them you might have a totally different holiday to the one you expected. If you use websites to look at your island, do a search and look at ALL of the sites - not just one in case the one you look at is years out of date. If you search for images of an island sometimes they are incorrectly captioned. Cocoa and Coco Palm are sometimes mixed up and I have seen photos purporting to be one, when actually they are the other. For example, some websites still state that Cocoa island has only 8 rooms. That has not been the case for about 5 years! At the rate that the hotels are upgraded the...

Worst time in the year to go

by leigh767

June and July are the monsoon periods. It rained all 5 days I was there! :( The stormy conditions also meant that a number of activities such as sunset fishing or snorkelling were cancelled. If you must go around that period, at least stay longer and see if you can catch the sun out once in a blue moon. Dec/Jan remain the most popular season for good reasons. Book in advance!

Clothing

After all Maldives is an Islamic country. You can wear whatever you like when you are at your resort but when come to visiting Male or their residency village, it's better to wear sleeves shirt and long pants or skirt. That the excursion operator told us.
