When you're on excursion...

by Dambulla

Nothing so dangerous, but you need to take care of your equipment before moving from your boat on excursion. Let's check if your tender is ok (fuel, addles, ext.) and don't miss to carry a rope and still water. Here what happened to our group: we had to move by addling because our motor was broken down...luckily, we were so close to the beach!!!

Mozzie City

by weekaiser101

The remoteness of the maldives has one fall back ,you cant just nip down to the local supermarket whenever you like,so do take all the mozzie repelents, creams etc etc most islands do have a small shop however they are not WAlmart ot Tescos!!

Don't smuggle in the booze

by trisanna

The Maldives is a Muslim country. But at the resorts they do have liquor. At our hotel- i thought the beer or liquor wasn't that expensive compared to Singapore restaurants. But the more expensive hotel-usually the mark up. Smuggling in liquor, pork products, religious materials are serious offenses. Probably confiscation and a fine. I am sure it's not how you want to start your vacation.

Hot! Hot! Hot

by mnath

It is very very hot! Mostly, I could only sit out for a maximum of 20mins until I needed to cool down in the sea or go for a snorkel. Make sure you bring high factor sun lotion or use P20 as we did and we didn't burn once. There are many different creatures on the island. There are the hermit crabs which hide under their shell. There are very timid gekkos. Quite a few fruit bats, which you only see in the evening when they fly off to another island for fruit. There are some ants (which bite a bit), but just make sure you are stocked up with the necessary mosquito repellents (including antihistimines). I was bitten badly and the staff provided me with Calmine lotion - which would be a good tip also.

No Alcohol!

by LisaMJ

Please remember that you cannot bring any alcohol into the Maldives as it's a Muslim country.........if you buy some at your originating airport, it will be held with Maldivian Customs until your departure day when you'll get it back. They x-ray all your luggage when you arrive. So don't even try to pull the wool over their eyes and just repsect their rules. Also, don't attempt to filter alcohol into another container: apparently if you are caught doing this it's seen as smuggling!

Fun Island Damaged by Tsunamis

by batgirl1001

Fun Island was severely damaged by the tsunamis which struck the country on 26 Dec 2004.This is a terrible event and hopefully the resort will recover soon to start its operations again. I hope all the staff are fine, including Latif. This was such a great island with such a warm hospitable environment. Although I think it will never be the same again, I will still come back to Villa Resorts and the Maldives because I still think it is the last paradise on Earth.

Do not touch any thing in sea...

by fashionapple

You have to be very careful during scuba diving or snorkeling around the coral reefs. There are many poisonous creatures in the sea. So do not touch any of them otherwise you might be in trouble. During my trip I met some tourists with water sports injuries and few of had this same problem of poison. So be careful and be smart. Respect the marine life and enjoy your stay in Maldivian waters :-)

Death by Coconut

by ClareBear

Before I visited the Maldives I was convinced I was going to get eaten by Sharks! So I surfed the net before I went and found out that that more people are injured or killed by falling coconuts than sharks in the world - not just the Maldives.Well my first thought was fine - I wont sit under any coconut trees and I will be fine! The whole island had a canopy of coconut trees, you hear a snap, a crack, a woosh and then a bang as it hits the floor. You hear this a few times through the day and night - I urge you BE CAREFUL under those trees.

Yes, the sun DOES burn!

by TravlinTone

Remember you are almost on the equator and those sun rays WILL get you , clouds or not. ALWAYS use sun cream, we are used to the sun but almost burned using factor 15 continuously.Remember to cover up your back when you snorkel.

Few biting insects on Baros

by TravlinTone

We never saw a mosquito on Baros (they spray the Island) but there were a few biting insects.Don't forget to take your insect repellant if you visit Male, there are plenty of things to bite you there in the markets
