Villivaru - Titan triggerfish

by mauro_pd

Beside the intro's joke by Bruno, the Titan can be aggressive. If it happen to cross his way while snorkeling:- do not react in an hyper-active mood- keep ur arms along the body and just use ur finns/feet to move- in the worst case he's attacking crush the water with arms, create some chaos.Anyhow, he attacks only to protecy his nest; leaving the area is a good way to prevent attacking.NO panic !!!!!!!! swim to the beach, not to the ocean !!!!!!!An attack has been reported while u were in Villivaru, no serious damages to the guy.

No Alcohol Allowed

by shash1010

Do not carry alcohol when you are visiting Maldives. Maldives is a Muslim country and therefore they do not allow tourist to bring in their own alcohol. However, all the resorts do server alcohol. And yes, you guessed it right, it is a bit expensive.... but then it's unavoidable ;)Or you can take a few alcohol chocolates like I did.....!!!!

There are things in the sea that sting

by reeley

There is wildlife in the sea that can cause nasty stings, such as rays, puffer and trigger fish. Look before you leap into the water, and if possible wear something on your feet - fins, flippers, rubber shoes etc.Just a little common sense and care and you won't have a ruined holiday.

Radiation warning!

by Gard

One of my problems when I go to a sunny destination like this is of course that the sun is a lot stronger than what I'm used to here in Norway. I have a pretty fair complexion and I was quite pale after a long Norwegian winter. I did try to take some artificial sun before we left but it didn't really help. So it was of course important to bring along some sun cream. Sun cream comes in different prices and qualities and this time I had decided to go for a sun filter called Reimann P20. The reason why I mention this is because it is a bit unique. First of all it has gotten very good scores in tests and you only apply it once a day! It is the last bit that made it a good option for me. Unfortunately the 20 sun factor was not strong enough for my pale skin so I got a bit sun burned on the shoulders and the neck on the very first day. But the Reimann P20 were a good product. The only problem...

Dont let coconuts go to your head....

by Custodyspice

DO NOT, and this goes without saying, sunbathe under coconut trees. Whilst sunbathing with another couple met here, we were all lined up in unison on the beach. I decided to move my chair nearer the water to dangle my toes in the water, so everyone followed suit. This must have been fate because no sooner had we moved and there was this loud thud and a coconut was laying precisely where my pals head would have been, which would have almost certainly resulted in a visit to the local hospital. DO NOT SUNBATHE UNDER COCONUT TREES!!!!!

Pesky Fish

by Custodyspice

When I went to the Maldives it was Aug/Sept time. Now, I got friendly with this rather large fish who kept coming right up to the water edge. Now I know this seems daft, but he kinda turned into my pet, as he used to turn up regular each day. We used to swim around together, I used to feed him bread, and I used to chase after him, which he seemed to enjoy. He did have these big rabbit-like buck teeth though. Anyway, after about a week I was telling the owners, and they informed me that I was swimming with a Trigger fish, and to be careful. Apparently around this time they can get a bit 'territorial' as it's the breeding period. Be especially vigilant if they are in pairs. The previous year they had to 'dispose' of a couple that had given a german tourist a nasty bite on the toe whilst sunbatheing on his lounger and they have been known to chaser divers out of the water. No wonder that...

Beware Lion fish.

by steveandmich

Whilst snorkelling outside our water bungalow we became aware of a lion fish living under the steps leading into the water. On speaking to other guests it turned out to be very common and some had more than one.I think as long as you do not aggitate it then there would not be a problem

Titan Triggers..........

by maldives01

These are probably the biggest danger in the water - they are very territorial and will attack if threatened or when guarding thier nests. Familiarise yourself with this fish - useful links:http://www.bubblevision.com/albums/similans/pages/trigger-fish.htm They grow to maybe 75 cms. to give some scale to the photo in the link.

The sea!

by pauleast

Yes its true, there are many things in the sea that could harm you such as eels, sharks, stone fish, sea snakes etc etcHowever most people are concerned about the sharks in the water. Whilst we were there for two weeks we saw many small black tip reef sharks of about 30-40cm. They would see you and turn around and swim away! Sharks are inquisitive creatures but will not attack unless provoked or you are seen as a meal ie you are swimming with bait etc!A long as you are sensible and respect the creatures in the sea then you will be fine and I can guarantee you will love the colours in the water it is amazing!
