Be careful !

by MOSSETT

There are no major problems or dangers in the Maldives but I would always watch where you are walking. The disadvantage of having a lovely coral reef is that you will get the odd sharp piece of coral on the beach or in the sea. you could cut your feet so watch out !Also be careful that you don't accidently stand on any sting rays. They are so close to the edge and sometimes bury in the sand, if you stand on them they will sting you. Other than that they just swim past you and are no problem.

YOU WILL BE HOOKED!

by DOUGALSMUM

WARNING, once you have visited the maldives you will be hooked , you will spend the next few years poring over brochures deciding which island to try next, each year trying a different version of paradise, and you will be working your fingers to the bone doing overtime to pay for it!!!!

Don't remove Coral!

by MattTB

apart from it being illegal under Maldivian law, removing coral from the ground/sea bed destroys the whole eco system of the Maldives! Please be responsible and leave coral and shells where you found them!If every visitor took a piece of coral home with them, there would be no coral left! Think of that!

Cigarette Ends and Litter

by MattTB

It always baffles me how people can come to sure a place blessed with beauty and yet leave their sh*t lying around in the sand and sea! Why don't you go to Benidorm if you want to litter the beach? Despite the warnings posted on the hotel the beach was covered in cigarette ends (butts)! Do you know how many years these take to disintergrate into the environment?? 200! Shocking isn't it? Also a turtle or orther animal could eat these and die a very painful death!Take the effort to put all your rubbish into a bag and put it in the bin at the end of the day Please!

Dangerous Fish!

by MattTB

Always remember you are an OBSERVER in the under water world! There are danerous fish out there, like Scorpion and Stone fish, Moray Eels and Sharks, BUT they won't do anything to you as long as you keep your distance and don't touch or chase them! Simple!

Big Bugs!

by Beestie

Remember that whilst you may be on a remote island in the middle of the Indian Ocean you will encounter big bugs. Our outside bathroom was frequented by giant ants - they didn't cause us a problem but there were a quite a few of them around. We had the unfortunate experience of a close encounter with "big" cockroaches - roughly 8cm in size. Be warned do not squash them. We learnt after the event that when squashed they emit an odour which attracts other cockroaches! On the friendlier side were the geckos and chameleon - we found lots of these frequenting the resort.

The Sun

by Beestie

The cool breeze can fool you into thinking it is not really very hot but the reality of it is you are only a couple of degrees off the equator and the sun is very strong.Factor 30 for the first few days would be recommended. Ease the factor down gradually and you will still go home with a really good colour.Make sure you take plenty of sun cream with you - the choice in the Maldives is very limited and quite pricey. There were 4 of us in total (including 2 children) and I had allowed a bottle a day (12 in total) which I had thought would be more than adequate, especially as the children were covered up during the heat of the day. I still ended up buying another 3 bottles during the course of the holiday which were not my usual brand (Piz Buin Allergy) and we had to ration ourselves for the last day or two. We all came home with a lovely tan without being burnt.

you will get bitten- take plenty of repellant

by DOUGALSMUM

unfortunately kuredu is plagued by various biting insects, even though they spray to cut down the problem you will still get bitten, wear plenty of insect repellant during the day as well as at night ( the sandflies get you during the day- the mossis during the night), also take some sort of repellant for your room ( preferably a knock-down spray)

not the typical maldives resort

by DOUGALSMUM

if you are a fan of the laid back style of maldives holiday kuredu is not for you, it is not the kind of island where you can find a beach to yourself, the bars and restaurants are quite busy so its hard to find a quiet spot to just "chill", but if your partner goes stir crazy on a quiet island this may be the ideal compromise.

make sure you pack some "aqua shoes"

by DOUGALSMUM

Although one of the fantastic things about the maldives is that you can go barefoot for the whole of your holiday the one place that you should wear shoes is in the ocean, there are sharp bits of dead coral in most lagoons, and coral cuts quickly get infected, also wear shoes for protection against the highly toxic stonefish which are so well camouflaged that you would not see them -although you should not be standing on the reefs anyway!!!rays lie invisible in the sand of the lagoon-they can give a nasty wound if stood on-shuffle your feet when you walk in the water, the rays will then see you coming and swim away without any conflict.
