Mongolian weekend itinerary

by Saagar

Here I will outline what you can expect to be doing when on a weekend-trip to Mongolia:Be sure to have hotel/guest house bookings made before you arrive - don't waste time on such things during your UB weekend! If you arrive, say from Beijing on the late afternoon flight, get installed in your hotel, meet the travel agent/contact and confirm your bookings and possibilities. Maybe you have time to see the key craft stores for anything you fancy - clothing, arts etc. Enjoy an evening in the city with some good food and Chjingis beer. It is a jovial atmosphere in New Mongolia. Next day - Saturday? - get out of town, go to Terelj National Park, or the area south of town with the wild horses, see the steppe and the larch-covered higher mountaineous terrain. Stay overnight in a well-organised ger-camp and sample some local food and drink - it's and adventure! Next day, hit back to Ulaan Baatar...

Mongolian transit visas

by K1W1

Getting a transit visa and tourist visa for Mongolia is easy. The costs are USD 15 for a transit and USD30 for a tourist visa (with 7 days processing time). A transit visa was valid for 7 days in the country. There was also a USD 5.00 document fee added at the embassy in Irkutsk.Double the price for next day delivery.Getting a visa at the border (Russian border) is also possible, but for some Hungarian friends the cost was USD 55.00 each !

Ms Zolzaya, the tour manageress

by victorwkf

Ms Zolzaya is a very sweet and nice lady, the tour manageress, who followed us throughout to take care of our needs in this rugged land of Mongolia. Don't be fooled by her looks, because she is a very rugged lady who is very good in horse riding!

Sammy, the tour leader

by victorwkf

Our tour leader, Sammy, is a very good tour leader who took care of the group very well. He even managed to help us safe some money by negotiating with the airport people in China during our transit. Sammy has been to Mongolia a few times and know the place very well. I am very happy to know him as a friend.

Mr Battulga, the bus driver

by victorwkf

Our bus driver, Mr Battulga, is a very friendly, cheerful and nice guy who is very good in singing. He was a former Mongolian wrestler, so we are quite safe to have him around. It was really nice knowing him.

Sunrise & sunset

by victorwkf

Because Mongolian mainly consists of open spaces, it is a very good place to watch the sunrise and sunset, which can be very dramatic. However, you may have to wake up very early or wait until late in the evening if you are going during summer.

No speak Mongolian? Solution:

by Saagar

Unable to make myself understood in Mongolia (apart from a few Russian words - but that's not very popular...), I resorted to sign language and the Lonely Planet Mongolian Phrase Book.Sign language for a European in Asia is normally doomed, but surprisingly not in Mongolia: it was easy! The explanation lies probably in the Russian influence over such a long time. The pharase book contains English-Mongolian cyrillic-pronounciation translation, and some useful as well as interesting and funny phrases. We had many funny conversations by help of this book! Mostly, the outcome was a happy and successful one.

Picnic, swimming & enjoying the summer

by victorwkf

The summer in Mongolia is warm but short, and therefore Mongolians love to enjoy summer while it lasts. Sometimes you can see families having picnics at the grasslands, going for a swim by the stream or river and drinking Vodka in celebration of the warm season. I have such an experience with one family and it was really a moment to remember.

Mongolian Art

by victorwkf

Mongolian art is very colourful and you can observe it around you when you are travelling e.g. inside of a ger, the door of a ger, souvenir shops, traditional clothings still worn by many people in Mongolia.

Variety of landscapes

by victorwkf

Mongolia is a country with a variety of landscapes which I enjoyed, ranging from grassland to desert to alpine scenery. In the remote western regions of the Altai Mountains, some of the mountains are snow-capped permanently with beautiful glaciers.
