Reliable driver 1

by Saagar

We employed Monoola for the full day trip and more from UB to Tsesterleg vil Lake Ogii. His English is limited to "yes", "no" and "soup", but his knowledge of the roads seemingly all over Mongolia is impressive. He knows the sightseeing spots and eateries and will go to great lengths to please. The jeep he used was immaculate and without any hitches at all, and his driving very good. Monoola was safety conscious with regard to driving, no drinking, gas levels and leaving the car locked/under supervision. He became a good friend during the day and night we spent together, and communication levels increased by the hour when he understood what we were looking for.He can be contacted via Bolod Namkhain, Bolod's Tours & Guesthouse located in a block of flats (into the courtyard first) opposite the Central Post Office on Peace Avenue in UB.

After a dusty day - bathing in rivers

by Saagar

After travelling miles and miles in a bumpy jeep over dusty steppe and powder-dusty tracks, it is just soo good to rinse off in a river or creek. It may be cold out, but you feel so good when snuggling up, clean, in your sleeping bag afterwards.Ensure that you're alone before going in nude, and also check that this is not somebody's drinking water around the curve of the river 200 m downstream...Try in any case to rinse off the soap on land if you have the tools of the trade.

BUDGET: the Togrog or in russian Tughrig is divides in 100 M?ng?s. The exchange rate in 2002 was around 1USD= 1100T. Better carry USD in small denominations and new money. Euros are accepted (1 Euro=1000T.)You can use only credit cards and cheks in U.B. at the Trade & Development Bank. You will spend from 5USD to 30USD/day according if you sleep in your own tent, on the gers or on the tourist camps (20-50USD/night/person), and according your way to travel: walking, bicycle, bus or renting a horse; more if you rent a jeep: around 80USD/jeep/day (petrol and driver included).ON THE STEPPE: take with you change in local money as you will need it to pay your nights under the gers and maybe for small expenses if you go throught a town. We travelled 2 weeks the first time without finding a town, only sometimes small villages to buy gas. So count how many nights you think you might spend under...

Beautiful steppe animals

by Saagar

The domesticated animals that roam the steppe, mowing its grass down to the centimetre, are animals perfectly adapted to people. But strangers they can sense, so you can only get that close. The horses seem free to roam and are herded back before the dark and the wolves scatter them at night. The goats, cattle, yaks and crossbreeds seem to have a certain routine and return home to the ger and animal enclosures by themselves. The yak and cows to be milked. The sounds and smalls of animals at night was reassuring and calming.

Joining a family in a ger

by Saagar

Getting the opportunity to stay with a family in a ger is a chance to behold. Most probably, at least in the absence of very senior leaders and lamas you will be treated to the position of honour and seated highest in the ger and served whatever the household can offer. You will automatically expected to have gifts or so in return (definitiely not money), but that is not really the point of inviting you. It's sheer hospitality and curiosity. You may be able to contribute to the household by helping with rough farm work (wood, hay etc.) and it's worth a try. Household members may also well show you their daily chores with the animals and other things. We were inivited to take part in cutting and drying the hay for the winter. This was in Akhangai on the northern slopes of the Khangai Altai range, the worst area for droughts, cold, too much winter snow etc.etc., and in 2000 nearly 80% of...

Mongolian music

by sachara

The traditional Mongolian music is very special. The first time I heard the khoomi singing of Mongolia I was astonished and thrilled, that the human voice could produce such amazing different notes at the same time. This throat or overtone singing can be reached by a lot training. There are also a lot of Mongolian traditional music instruments, like the famous ''morin khuur'' or horsehead fiddle with two strings made of horse hair. Last summer the Mongolian music group Egschiglen, living in Germany for the moment, came for the second time to my home town to give a concert in the open air at the annual Full Colour Festival. It was splendid and breathtaking !Mongolia at five minutes from my home.

Milking the horses

by sachara

Of our visit to the nomadic family we enjoyed most the moment they milked the horses. The foals were lined up. Each foal could drink first and then ''the lady of the ger'' milked each mother horse immediately. It took a lot of time, so we couldn't wait till the last mare was be milked, because it was getting dark very fast and we liked to reach our temporary ger at the camp in time. For more pictures see my travelogue.
