Gurvan Saikhan Airport, Dalanzadgad

by Willettsworld

We flew back to Ulaanbaatar early morning from this little airport just outside Dalanzadgad on an airline called Enzis, founded in 2006, on a small 35-seat Saab 340B. The airport terminal in new (opened in 2005) and check-in is all done by hand - even the boarding passes were written out by hand. There are no modern scales just one old heavy duty looking scale that was built donkeys years ago in Czechoslovakia! Enzis only have three planes but are the biggest domestic airline in Mongolia with 70% of the market, flying to 11 destinations within the country.

Plane

We flew to Gobi from Ulaan Baatar. The plane was a Russian built military Topolov. It landed straight onto the steppe without runway. I must say I freaked out a little bit when I heard I was about to travel in a Russian plane, but the trip was one of the best in my life, very enjoyable and as the plane was flying low, I took hundreds of pictures of the landscape below, which is spectacular.

Desert Transport

In the Gobi we travelled around with a Russian built mini bus. Our driver was Mongolian and this is very important because there are no roads, no road signs. You just have to know the paths and the orientation. The land is flat, but sometimes it has bumps. I am happy to report that we didn't have any mechanical failures on the way. But even if you do, these drivers know how to fix almost anything. This is the advantage of riding a Russian bus over say a new Japanese made jeep. New technology cars are very complex and cannot be repaired by the driver. So you can stay stranded somewhere for ever waiting for help.
