Local food: Live a little and be adventerous!

by GCoop

I was able to eat at a local family's Ger one afternoon...I had absolutely no problem with the food in Mongolia. Not wanting to offend the host, I ate everything that was brought out. There were meats, bread, and cheese and butter...The "cheeses" had camel hair on it, but I just picked it out and continued eating...It was a little strong but not too bad...It is complimentary to leave a little tip when you are through with the meal.... The Mongolian version of tea is quite good and tatses a little like oatmeal!

The Fairview cafe: An oasis in Tsetserleg

by Saagar

Tired of very stringy, old sheep meat?Come to the Fairview in Tsetserleg, in the central part of town, walking distance to all other facilities, services and shops. This place is a bit like a Thamel restaurant in Kathmandu in 1980, and arriving there after a long trip through India and Nepal... get the feeling? The restaurant can also be a contact point for getting drivers, notably the two I mention in my tip "Reliable driver" 2 & 3. They both occasionally work for this restaurant, too. Salads, pies, cakes, burgers, chili con carne, lasagna, you name it.Bakery goodies, cinnamon rolls....Hot chocolate.

Mongolian Food

by victorwkf

Generally, Mongolian food consists mainly of meat dishes such as mutton and beef, with some vegetables. Chicken, pork and seafood are rare in Mongolia so these will be more expensive. Generally, Mongolia is not really famous for its food, so you have to bear with it.

GASTROMONIA

GASTRONOMIE

by grazy56

SPECIALITY

Mongolians appreciate a lot milk products called "white food", and that is what they offer first to visitors. They believe that eating milk products make longer the own life. The meat or "grey food" has also its place in Mongolian cooking. From middle of August to middle of September, Mongolian hunt and eat boiled marmot. Mongolians don't eat fish and lakes are full of big fish, you can buy some from the monads and you will just have to make a fish barbacue. In U.B. restaurants offer you international cooking and after a few weeks in the steppe you will appreciate !Guantz or soup-kitchen, almost only used by Mongolian serve good and plentiful helpings of traditional food for around 100 T. If numerous and hidden in the skycrapers in the towns, on countryside you will find them under gers.It is easy to find food in the small towns: you will find bolled or fried ravioli with meat.In nomadic...

by grazy56

The Mongolian Steppe Bar: A beautiful girl, waving, coming rushing to you...

by Saagar

In the middle of what you thought was nowhere these little shacks and shelters are propped up. They can be close to a track, but invariably conspicously smack in the middle of the steppe. That's their advertisement - you'll see it from far away. These are local airag outlets, bars, really, staffed by either granny and the grandchildren, or the sweetest daugther in eligible age. And they come rushing out at you to convince you to have a drink if it seems you'll pass without business. All guarantees a good drink and a chat - if you like airag. Not airag, but in emergency, yes. Good to know they're there.
