Hmmm..., the one made of logs to the southeast.: Good guanz in Ondor Ulaan

by Saagar

For a food stop between Tsetserleg and Tariat in Arkhangai Aimag, Ondor Ulaan offers several options. We chose this one after a quick check of food availablity and cleanliness and state-of-the-cook.A happy lady showed us how and what she would made and took us into the enigmatic secrets of guanz food creation. Seriously, she showed us how to make hand made noodles steppe-style. Just regular guanz food here, and they (I asked in several guanzes!!!!) refused to cook my freshly caught fish from neighbouring Chuluut river for 5000 T!Nothing special, in other words, and the price level 2500-3000 T was appropriate. But the place was clean and the butter tea not rancid, and that's something. We quite enjoyed our break here!

The pink "Restaurant Shop": Fancy Guanz

by Saagar

This is the most fancy guanz I ever saw. When you're well out of Mongol Els on your return toward Ulan Bataar, you pass Rashaant town on top of the hill, and proceed half-way to Erdeneshant. You will come to a small community that seems purpose-built for serving road travellers. Among the eastern-most places there is this pink palace. But also other guanzes have fantastic color schemes. We chose this one partially due to the enchanted colors, though! The food here is mainly based on regular guanz staples, but spiced up and with sliced vegetable on the side. They had frozen and canned frankfurters and other would-be goodies for those who have been on the guanz-road for a long time.I chose an omelette, which did not fail to meet expectations. Hens out here? Chicken meat was also available, even if this in principle is impossible - chickens cannot be herded on the steppe? So, an unusual...

Roadside lodges all over Mongolia: Guanz food in general

by Saagar

The roadside inn food is what you will meet as a budget traveller on an unsupported tour around the countryside. The "guanz" (inn) food is not a culinary highlight, nor are the cooks aspiring for a Michelin star. But it serves to fill you up, continuing your journey and hoping for greener pastures at the next guanz. The price is typically up to 3000-3500 Togrog for a meal plus butter tea. Most places the food served is local, most of the time home made. It is on the oily side (mutton fat) and with few if any vegetables. As it is normally well cooked and fried up immediately before your meal, the chances of getting food poisoning is limited from the food itself. But you need a strong stomach to take all what is offered. Home made wheat or buckwheat flat noodles with fresh mutton meat and some salt and pepper and ketchup for flavour. It's a plus to bring your own spices.Good for a fill, but...

Home-made noodles

by anzzz

Here's an example of the more traditional Mongolian cuisine, home-made noodles. As they don't have too many chickens in Mongolia, they also don't have eggs. That's why the noodles taste very much like flour and salt. If you have the choice between noodles and rice, I'd advise you to go for the rice!

Well, this ain't a restaurant :): Fish in Mongolia

by anzzz

Mongolia is known for sheep and horses. Mutton is basically the only thing that you get to eat, mutton with rice, mutton with noodles, and again mutton with rice. But, we were so lucky to stay at a fisherman's place for one night! He went to the lake in the morning to catch us some breakfast. That was so yummy, absolutely the best meal we had in Mongolia. This family had no animals at all, which is very strange in Mongolia! They mainly sell fish to the capital but because it is several hours away by car and there are no means to keep the fish cooled in the summertime, they only work in the winter and have holidays in the summer. They also had no car but there is always someone coming from the capital to fetch the fish.

Gastronomic Catastrophe

by D_Shannon

Mongolia is a gorgeous place and I loved every second of my visit, but the country is not known for its gastronomic pleasures. The food - namely mutton, mutton, more mutton and some incredibly strong yogurt - is pretty fatty and bland. If you're staying a long time, bring some oregano to spice things up.

Food

by archan4698

Outside of UB, Erdenet and Darkhan eating in Mongolia is basically whatever is available. For the most part that means mutton, flour, potato, maybe carrots. I personally liked hooshuu(fried meat pasteries filled with mutton or meat+potato+onion). Its a good idea to bring spices from home in your pack to use at country side restrurants or even in the city, like cayenne pepper, curry powder, etc does a great job of adding more variety. the other common dishes are Buunz(small meat pasta sorta balls in soup. or just mutton and potato slices on a plate. Fish is rare, chicken is more rare. Hooshuu

Lamb Hot Pot

by nepalgoods

This is a Mongolian man preparing a local dish: First the water in the pot is brought to boil by putting hot stones into it. Then pieces of lamb-meat are put together with some spices into the boiling water. After a while it is cooked and it tastes very nice.

BOILED MUTTON AND KETCHUP ON RICE

by swesn

A typical Mongolian dish is boiled mutton and rice, with ketchup on the rice. You will get to eat this over and over again. You may not like it but you will surely get to eat this over and over again. The reason is... not being able to READ the Mongolian menu, you can only try to point to another person's dish. And the other person's dish is almost always boiled mutton with rice and ketchup.

HORSE MILK

by swesn

The typical drink of the Mongolian herdsmen is horse milk, which is salty in taste. One needs some time to get used to it because it looks like milk but the taste is entirely unexpected. I was okay with it. Some just find it disgusting.
