Restaurant wagon

by SirRichard

We had a glimpse of mongolian food in the train restaurant. As you pass through different countries, the train changes the restaurant wagon and, though the food is not very different, you can try some specialities. From Mongolia I remember a tasty meat soup and some delicious noodles.

NO RESTAURANT ON THE STEPPE...

by grazy56

no restaurant on the steppe only you eat with local people under the gerunder the ger atmosphere is fantastic: you must absolutly tryyou will pay around 5usd per personn including for sleeping under the ger.sometimes you can find some guantz who are mongolian highway restaurants but don't wait for Maxim's in Paris¨generally the guantz are ger where you can find some food as "buzz" (big ravioli with mottun meat)On U.B. you can find many reataurant who sell traditional or international food, we tryed "El Toro" and "Chinggis" where on this one you can listen traditional music. you eat different kind of cheese, good wodka, hormog, yogurt, cream and the famous airak... this is traditional food on countryside. Nomads will cook for you a soup with pasta (good).

PEACE AVENUE

by kiwigal_1

Ulaan Baatar is FULL of restaurants now. In the last 10 years the face of UB has changed drastically and Peace Avenue (see pic) is dotted with cafe's and restaurants with cuisine ranging from Japanese to European. The big American fast food chains have still not made there way to Mongolia but perhaps this is a good thing! There is a very good bar/restaurant/foreign hangout called Khan Brau diagonally opposite the main Post Office. Mongolian dishes usually contain mutton in some form or other. Buuz (steamed dumplings) are very good. There are soups (mutton of course!) with home made noodles in them. For a real treat try shorlog and khorkhog if you can!

WHERE TO EAT IN ULAAN BAATAR

by kiwigal_1

CHINGGIS HOTEL RESTAURANT(Mongolian and European food).ULAAN BAATAR HOTEL RESTAURANT(Mongolian and European food).FLOWER HOTEL(Japanese food and European food).SEOUL RESTAURANT(Korean and Mongolian food). The Seoul Restaurant has some shows around dinner time. Generally it is Mongolian Khoumi (throat singing) which is well worth seeing. Mongolia isn't known for its culinary delights with mutton being the main dish, but there are some foods that you should try on your trip to Mongolia. You should try 'buuz' which is best at the Ulaan Baatar Hotel. The soup at all hotels is good but it can be a bit oily. I recommend the Vegetable soup.

SHORLOG

by kiwigal_1

It isnt technically a restaurant but here is a pic of my hosts and I camping in Kharkhorin. We are eating shorlog which is Mongolian kebabs. The meat (usually mutton) is marinated with onions and carrots and skewered and cooked over coals. DELICIOUS!

-: Salty Tea and Western Spinoffs

by Hyddendragon

The restaurant/cafe is situated just beside the second-hand bookshop close to Zanizibar Museum. It serves the ubiquitous Mongoian salty tea and the western-style food (eggs and beef patties) on rice that is also quite common. The beef patties are quite good and if you want the local salty tea (whetehr with or without milk!) this is one place to go!

In my limited experience, Mongolian food isn't particularly interesting, but the restaurant at the Hotel Palace wasn't too bad. When visiting a nomadic family, I tried various traditional snacks. The steamed mutton dumplings and milk cakes, spread with a kind of sweet butter, were pretty good. I liked the salty tea also-its like soup.

In Mongolia has many kind of restaurants. For example:Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Turkish etc.And My favorite restaurant is: Chinvan Khanddorj's Orgoo. The restaurant services Mongolian traditional and European foods. And you can enjoy folk cultural show (Singing, dance, folk ansamble's show etc.) during the meal. The cost will be: about 10$ for breakfastabout 15$ for lunch about 20$ for dinnerAnd if you want to see folk show the cost will increase. The Restaurant services Mongolian Traditional foods. There are: Buuz(a kind of steamed meat dumpling), Khuushuur(fried meat pie), Bansh(meat dumpling), Bantan (meat broth thickened with flour) etc. and EUROPEAN FOODS

All local restaurant will be fine, but choose one with more people in it which looks clean and tidy. Many local restaurant doesn't accept VISA or MASTER CARD, the best is to use US dollars. Many local restaurant doesn't have a toilet. The Mongolian people appreciate fat lamb. The traditional food isn't very healthy for foreigners (it consists of fat & meat). Their most important beverage is made from milk of mares and yaks (long-haired cattle).Lamb is the most common meat in Mongol. Try the ,tasty Lamb backbones.Get a bottle of beer.Cheap & great taste!Try their very peculiar tasting tea,it is not sweet but salty!

Any local restaurant will be fine, but i would choose the one with more people in it and the one looks clean and tidy. Most of the local restaurant looks quite dull and ugly, but there's where you could get the right taste of the local food. Many local restaurant doesn't accept VISA or MASTER CARD, the best is to use chinese dollars. Also many local restaurant doesn't have a toilet.....so prepare to wash your hand with their bucket. Lamb, mutton are the most common meat in Mongol. Try go to the local restaurant to get some tasty Lamb backbones...they come in a bowl....Use Ur hands ! It only cost U $10 chinese dollars. Get a bottle of beer....$2 or $3 dollars....Cheap & great taste!
