State Department Store 4th floor: Bow and Arrow - Mongolian national sport No. 2

  • The State Department Store is in a big building with a plaza in front right on the main street, the Peace Avenue. This is well-documented and described by other VT tippers, too.

Other souvenir stores and handicraft stores have them, too. I asked a local about the quality of the bows and arrows sold in these stores, and he guaranteed they wer fine and of the normal sort used in Mongolia.

The traditional competition bow and arrow can be bought here.
It comes in three sizes: 1) children 2) women 3) adult men.
They are made from bone and wood and sinew if made properly. Add nylon string for modernity? And varnish.

They offered to pack mine in a tube for easy transport. However, transport logistics prevented me from buying one this time. But next time I'll go for it!

Silk clothing, , variations of the del (short versions are useful and nice for other places too.
    Wool clothing.
    Various arts
Visit the old market, but hold on to your valuables … pick pocketing

The prices vary from about 300 000 Tögörög to 40-50 000 by size and quality. Additional arrows and storage container extra.

  • Black market is an interesting place where you can see the real local people who tries to supply thier kids and family and selling goods in all during four seasons, still staying in outside when it gets -30 in freezing winter,
All the basic foodstuffs are available from the various number of super markets. Many types of imported food are sold in department store Bars and Mercury food market. several shops are selling camping gears and also in the black market you can find everything as well as NORTH FAKE ( north face) made in china but it’s ideal to buy those the price of one tenth in Europe around 25$ the quality isn’t that bad . The black market is known Har Zakh in Mongolian Narantuul is the biggest and main place for locals to buy clothing, traditional costume, hand made furniture, high quality of Mongolian carpets, fresh fruit and vegetable also fresh meat just from grazing land and traditional milk products as well as Mongolian GER felt tent with all the details and decorations, This is the place you can find the cheapest things in a town but sure you should bargain take your tour guide or Mongolian friend when you go there, But don’t worry Mongolians are very honest people so they don’t increase the price like Chinese just maybe just few hundreds believe them .
The most important things is to be careful with your stuffs don’t take your passport, wallet with lot of money and camera there are group of pickpockets in black market and they are almost professional some come in front of you other push you from your back and they make crowd on purpose and in that time some will steal your things and will run away in second.

Here you can find everything everything, from the stationary to second handed German shoes /10-20$/ , Traditional Mongolian clohes, hand made felt boots /15-20$/, traditional Del / 25-30$/, some traditional furniture with beautifil painting, wooden chair /4$/ depending on the size, small wooden chair or maybe tea dest will ge breat present to your loved ones, but and then post them in Post office, there is a inside Food market there you coud find from mutton to milk product, dried curd, clotted cream, as well as fermented mare's milk / less than 1$ per litre/.

Here are some useful Mongolian phrases that might help you! don't expect that they will speak english to you!!
*How much does it cost? Ene yamar unetei ve? / Энэ ямар үнэтэй вэ? /
*I would like to buy... Bi …-iig avmaar baina / Би ...- г авмаар байна /
*Can I try this ….? Bi omsoj uzej boloh uu? / Би өмсөж үзэж болох уу? /
    *Boots Gutal / Гутал /
    *Deel Deel / Дээл /
*Do you have smaller / bigger one? Tanid arai jijig/ tom baina uu? / Танд арай жижиг / том байна уу? /

In the restaurant wagon, they have a little shop where they sell typical products. We bought some cachemire gloves and a camel wool pullover.
Besides, in every station where the train stops you can see an intense trading through the windows, mainly between chinese people of the train and locals…

This is a HUGE and very modern Department Store-cum-Supermarket.

Considering the fact that you are in Mongolia, a very REMOTE country, this place is actually quite well-stocked.

Everything, if you are not too demanding, seems to be available in the ground-floor supermarket floor and upper-floor department stores. Good to stock up on groceries to cook at your guesthouse.

  • I'm not sure what's the name of it in English, but in Mongolian it is something like this. It is located near the main train station (10m east from it on the same side of the street) - a grey two-story building.

A good one-stop shop for all your gifts - cashmere, carpets, leather goods and sheepskin. On the second floor at the very end there is a store selling goods made of yak wool - a good cheap alternative to cashmere.

  • There are few cashmere shops where you can find good quality of Cashmere cloths for cheap price comparing with other countries but the Quality of Mongolian pure cashmere is the best in the world, there are some factory make clothes by Italian style pretty cool.

specially in fall all the shops are in Discount like 5 %,
    *Cashmere house*

The State Dept Store in UB has a great selection of souvenirs, including some wonderful Mongolian jackets, but the prices are a bit high. Save it for last, and instead do all the shopping you can at smaller, cheaper outlets. There's a good one around the corner from that Bayansomethingorother hotel near the square, and the small shop in the Juulchin Camp airport actually had some really nice postcards and masks. Or, of course, you can be a real tourist like us and manage to shop right in the middle of the Gobi!

    Traditional jacket.
Sheep ankle bones (for fortune telling - make sure you get an English instruction kit!)
    Wooden masks.
Vodka! Comes in a fantastic leather pouch.

  • Dels, the Mongolian herdsman/woman clothing, can be bought fairly inexpensively. Actually you can buy the fabric, and have it made for you fairly quickly.

A snuff bottle is another popular item, they range from very cheap 5 dollar bottles to 100 dollars or more.
