  • During July, Mongolians celebrate Naadam which means "holiday" but its their National Holiday.
Naadam is a 3-4 day long sports competition. Wrestling, Horse Racing and Archery are the 3 manly sports that take place during the events. Women can compete in archery.

Naadam in UB is most popular and televised but there are smaller Naadams all over the country.

If your in a soum for naadam, and you meet someone, it might be possible to wrestle :)

***Remember Mongolian horses are half wild animal and don’t try to treat as a pet***
Chu Chu....Ready for horse trekking read this!!! Sure it will help you.
it's funny that people think horses will eat apply from someone's hand!!! Your idea doesn't work with Mongolian horses,,
Here are the most important things to bear in your mind when you riding a horse.
*When you mounting and get off a horse always do from the right side
*Don’t go closer to the backside of the horses it may rear.
*Make sure that your saddle is comfortable enough and it’s better to take a Russian saddle instead of Mongolian one.
*Make sure your stirrups are exactly suit for you. Mongolians use a short stirrups and always stand up when they gallop.
*Don’t put your shoes too deep in to your stirrup it will be difficult to take it out if you have an accident get off the horse. ( Very important )
*Make sure that you have a boots ( with bootleg )
*Don’t make such a noisy ( plastic materials ) when you are on a horse
*Be careful with your stuffs aand don’t fall down your bags it may frighten off the horse
*Don’t use such a colorful clothes , too white, Yellow, Red so on.
*Don’t use very strong and smelly perfume
*Never hit the horse !!! especially to their head
*Mongolians use the phrase “Chuu “ to make their horse go.

*Ask russian saddle from your guide
*take a riding boots, not one for trekking
*maybe a whip will help you to make your horse go faster, they easily feel and know if you're not good at horse or if you're scared of them, then they just scoff You!!
*Hold your briddle tight & show how you are!!!

    Naturally - the Nadaam!

  • The Nadaam sports and cultural festival draws huge crowds. So many other VT'ers have written about this and guidebooks go into details that I refrain from anything here on my part, except for one thing:

Every Aimag capital and Sum centre has its own Nadaam - it is not only Ulaan Bataar. So if your are travelling around at the time of the Nadaam in July, you will have a chance to join the local enthusiastic crowds almost wherever you are.

    Simple gear got me these

Fishing for me is not really a sports activity, but a way of getting access to food in a recreational way...
Mongolai has plenty of fish and few people who fish, so there is plenty of opportunity to add to your scope of activities and supplement your diet. I have written other tips about fishing, so check for those.

The upmarket and specialized tourist agencies may perhaps offer fishing equipment for hire or as part of a package deal, but do not expect much good gear on the market for purchase.
    Bring your own!
Bring reel, line, collapsible rod, spoons, spinners and everything else you might need. Buy reliable brands and quality, but don't bring your best and most expensive gear - the cross-country trip to reach your river might be a rough one indeed and the equipment might take a beating. If you do not want to take it all back with you, consider to give the equipment away - they are welcome gifts.
