Visiting nomadic families

by Willettsworld

During my 12-day tour around Mongolia, we stopped off to visit a few nomadic families at their gers on a whim by just turning up on their doorstep. Mongolian's are extremely welcoming people and dropped what they were doing and came and greeted us and gave us milk tea and dried mare's milk curd known as aaruul. I suppose any visit of any kind doesn't happen all the time given how remote some of them are but I always felt that we were interrupting and taking advantage of their hospitality by turning up unannounced. Maybe it's just me being British but we hardly do this back home!

Volunteering in Mongolia

by kfitzmorgan

There are many opportunities to volunteer your time and skills to the betterment of the people of Mongolia. There are, unfortunately, almost unlimited social problems here, including health, domestic violence, orphans, small business development. The good news is that there are many NGOs working in Mongolia. So if you want to help, there is no shortage of possibilities. You need to think about several things before diving in:• What skills do I have to offer?• What demographic am I especially interested in?• How much time can I commit? What skills do I have to offer. Most people have more skills than they think they have. Just living and working in the developed world exposes us to many facets of business that are just lacking here in Mongolia. You might have a primary job or skill such as accounting, but you also have personal interests and experiences that also can be a source of skills....

by grazy56

NAADAM ON U.B (11/12-O7)

by grazy56

NADAAM: national holiday feast where Mongolian come from each part of Mongolia each year from July 11 to 12. They came to see their 3 manly and preferred games: wresting, archery and horse racing. During summer in the countryside you can see small Naadam, but date and places change often.Don't miss the big Naadam in U.B.: the opening ceremony starts at 10 am in the stadium, you can buy tickets outside or Mejet, the driver, can buy them for you, go earlier as seats without number. The opening ceremony will enrapture you and show you a new dimension, another world. The festival begins with a ceremonious ride by medieval warriors bearing the Nine Banners of Chinggis Khan acconpagnied with drum music. The wrestling performance starts at the end of the opening ceremony:it is a majestic show even thought it is very slow and in the stadium you are far away from the wrestlers (take binoculars)....

Tovkhon Khiid

by hayward68

Tovkhon Khiid monastery is quite remote atop a mountain at an altitude of 2312m, reached by traversing a heavily forested, rough road. Our van couldn't quite make it to the top so we walked partway, I think we only had a mile or two to walk after the van gave up. This monastery is where Zanabazar lived for 30 years, though this was on and off. It's thought that he created much of his artwork here. It originally built around 1650 but was largely destroyed by the Communist forces in the 1930s. Restoration work has been done and there are temples to visit. You emerge from the trees to a sort of plateau and see a few gers. To your left is a quite impressive ovoo made up of branches, from what I could see. It was completely covered in blue prayer flags. To reach the temples you climb a narrow path further up the mountain. This area offers stunning views and is quite a peaceful place. A...

Horse trekking

by Tulka

it's impossible to imagine Mongolia without horse! if you leave this country without doing horse riding at least few hours, It's just a same as You leave the river without watering your thirsty Horse !!!Those people seems were born on a horse, Mongolian horses are quite smaller than Europeans probably seems like Ponies but don’t tell them about it, Horses were the main transport means in Mongolian for thousand of years. In recent decades quite many herders have motorcycle, and Russian jeep. But most Mongolians still use horses for transportations, Migrations, and daily life. Mongolia is big country it’s not easy to see many different areas traveling by horse unless you have much time ,so the best way is to get places by jeep or plane and arrange the horses from the local for couple of days and longer ( The price of renting a horse and local guides are defferent depending on the area For...
