Bayanzag - Flaming Cliffs

by hayward68

Bayanzag is known as the Flaming Cliffs because of its beautiful red sandstone which changes to a dark red as the sun sets. This area is where American paleaontologist Roy Chapman Andrews first discovered dinosaur bones and fossils in the early 1920s. It is thought that the animals were buried by landslides. We wandered around the cliffs for over an hour watching the colours change during sunset. You can have a look for fossils and dinosaur bones, good luck, but do remember that if you do find anything, you can't keep it. There is a tourist camp nearby which has showers but it wasn't open when we were there. Instead, we stayed in the guest ger of our guides friend. He was a bit of an entrepreneur, a young Mongolian man who lived with his mother and owned a herd of camels. He was setting up his own gers for use by tourists. For a small fee he'll even take you for a ride on one of his...

Nomadic Life

by hayward68

I highly recommend taking the opportunity to stay with a nomadic family. We stayed with two different families on our trip, the first family was the first day out of Ulaanbaatar. We eventually found the family after driving around for a while in the general area the guide and driver knew them to be. We were the first ones of the season so they weren't too sure where the family actually was, , so we drove around and around until we found them, after all they are nomads so they move around. This family had a flock of goats and sheep and a small herd of horses. We also saw one cow with a calf. The family consisted of a father and his two grown sons, both whom were married with children. There were two family gers and one storage ger with the pen for the animals in the middle. The horses roamed freely. We stayed in the ger of one of the sons, he and his wife and son stayed in the other...

Gobi salt lakes

by Saagar

Even a desert has rivers and lakes. Some of them seasonal, some turning into colorful salt lakes due to the heavy evaporation. You find several of these fairly small ones east and south-east of Shainshand. Getting there takes some effort and expedition style travel. leave it to a reputable agent or end up as another skeleton in the desert...

The Gobi on the cheap

by Saagar

You do not have to do a big round trip or package deal or extremely organised sort of deal to see and be in the Gobi. But you may need to accept a degree of uncertainty baked into your project. This is one option: As an excursion out of UB, or on the way into Mongolia, or on the way out over the Chinese border; get out of the train at either Choir or at Shainshand, or even Zamin Üdd (the border station). From either of these three places, get some kind of local transport or make a deal with a knowledgeable travel agency for a pick-up and get out of town and into the desert. Shouldn't cost you neither an arm nor a leg, but count on roughing it... Regarding the onward transportation you may have some challenges if wanting to jump on the Trans-Mongolian Express and expecting 1st class service. May not be available. Heading back to UB is probably easiest on a local train or the local part of...

SOME IDEAS...

Mongolia is a vast country with very different landscape. Mongolia is often imagined as a green steppe but that is only partly true. South is a real desert almost without sand; Center and West are hilly but witout forests and the North is the kingdom of taiga.IMPORTANT THINGS TO VISIT: first at all discover the wonderful landscape in the huge steppe and deserts where you can see traditional tents and wild animal life, hunting the marmot from August 15 to September 15; hunting with eaglesfrom October with Khazaks (information mejet69@yahoo.com: unforgettable trip, be careful it is very cold in October). If you are only a few days, be aware that steppe starts a few km far from the capital, and a tour of 2/3 days can give you a good vision of the astonishing beauty of the Mongolian steppe.SOME IDEAS *Terelj: a favorite place of tour operators about 80 km from U.B. *visit monadic families...

GITA A CAVALLO DAI TSAATANS

by grazy56
