A REAL tourist trap

by Saagar

Due to the hot-water heating system in UB's city buildings and dwelling blocks, underground pipes make UB into some kind of Swiss cheese. The pipes lead hot water into radiators from the power plants at the outskirts of town.Due to accidents, lack of maintenance and with the swelling vagrant population and some 3-5000 street kids, many of the lids and closures to this underground system have been broken - in part to gain access to warm underground temporary living quarters. These are deep holes that could destroy you one dark night when you are not watching your step... Be careful so you do not fall in. Bring a torch light for dark nights and surprise electricity outings.

MONGOLIA WORTH TO BE SEE ALL BUT:...

by grazy56

In Mongolia worth to be see ALL: nothing is not worth to be see, just try to get advices to make a round trip who permit you to go to see what you want without waste time as roads are terrible and traportation is slow.So you will never dessapointed by this country as even you not go very far from U.Baatar, as after 10 km far from U.B. you are already on steppe, just you can meet more tourists there than if you go a little more far away.

"ger camps"

by archan4698

well, for many visitors they have set up ger camps outside of Ulaan Baatar. You do stay in a ger but usually with germans, koreans, etc. Not entirely a trap cause local herdsman may pay u a visit from their gers nearby. walk to a mongolian families ger and introduce yourself, most of what they will want to know about u is in a guidebook1.where are u from2.whats your name3.fathers name4.do u have brothers5.occupation6.age. :)

NAADAM FESTIVAL

by swesn

Many tours booked from outside of Mongolia offer REALLY EXPENSIVE tickets for the most celebrated festival in Mongolia - the Naadam Festival held from 11 July to 13 July. At Nassan’s Guesthouse, Nassan seemed to be able to buy the tickets at the local price of T2000, subject to availability. The Opening Ceremony is quite tacky actually. Besides the usual people decked out in traditional Mongolian costumes and warrior outfits, there were Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Xena-lookalikes. Don't ask.Still, the events are rather interesting with wrestling (which can get boring after a while) and archery competition and on the next day, a horse-racing event held at Yaamag. The mood is very festive with all the Mongolians out to enjoy themselves in the food and game stalls set up around the stadium and fields.Website : http://www.csen.org/Mongol.Nadaam/Mongol.text.html

Never ever try to get on the...

Never ever try to get on the taxi through the local guy inside the train station. They will cost you a fortune or they could take you to somewhere and robe you!!If U are travelling by train, make sure you get the ticket at the train station office, and not from the people who bump up to U. Most of them selling fake ticket. Be aware! U can get your train or plane ticket before hand at the Big hotel. But they do charge you a service fee for that. It is much better to do that instead of you queneing 2hrs time at the Train station waiting for an answer 'No ticket'
