Tour transport

by Willettsworld

I did a 12-day tour around Mongolia through a company called Black Ibex in one of their vehicles which was a 12-year old Toyota Landcruiser diesel. My driver, called Ganaa, was a very accomplished driver and certainly knew how to drive in Mongolian conditions. How he navigated without any road signs was beyond me, he just touched his head and said "GPS"! He actually let me drive for a short distance when we were on the edge of the Gobi desert so it was miles away from anyone else!

Russian transport

by Willettsworld

You'll see these all over Mongolia - transportation relics left over by the Russian's but still very popular today. They're built by a company called Uaz who produce a jeep and a minibus. They seem to be fairly reliable looking things given that their design dates back decades but they're both 4x4's, cheap and easy to maintain which is why they're still used. I spoke to a few tourists who were travelling in them and they seemed to be enjoying the experience. Me, I'll settle for a modern 4x4 any day (I did my tour in a 12-year old Toyota Landcruiser diesel which was actually older than many of the Russian vehicles).

RENT A JEEP/ NEED A DRIVER?

by grazy56

Going to Mongolia: better plane or train from Bejing or from Moscow or from Irtkoursk see next chapterLOOKING AROUND: rent a jeep is almost necessary as busses are slow and don't reach all the cities, and after it can be hard from thoses small administrative center to find a jeep to make a look around on the steppe. With a jeep you meet local people easilier and divide and taste their traditional way of life under the ger, and it's REALYY WORTH ITWE RECOMMEND YOU STRONGLY MEJET WHO IS A WONDERFUL DRIVER (SEE PHOTO) E-mail: mejet69@yahoo.comMejet, for 90/95euro/day/jeep, will show you his marvellous country which he knows perfectly. You can be sure that almost every night will be spent in gers; he will pick you up on arrival and he can arrange your accomodations. BE AWARE THAT MEJET RECEIVES A LOT OF REQUESTS,SO DON'T WAIT TOO LONG! and sometimes the jeeps are as hard to find as good...

NOLEGGIO JEEP / ALLA RICERCA DI UN AUTISTA?

by grazy56

by grazy56

Cheapest way to get UB from Beijing,

by Tulka

Hi there!!I guess you are having a trouble to get Ulaanbaatar (UB) from Beijing (BJ). well there are international trip twice a week. but you're right sometimes the tickets are sold out quite early. So what locals do? Here you go, first it's quite fun to take this option, taking a sleeping bus from BJ to Erlian (mongolian & chinese border town). Bus leaves around 5 every day then arrives early in the morning like 4 or 5am. then you should cross the border by normal bus to reach Zamiin Uud, Mongolian border town & take daily train to UB. train leaves at 5.55pm so you have enough time to wander around, view my profile for more infos, and don't hesitate to contact me if you need further infos,Good luck , Tulka.G

From India to Mongolia by air

by Saagar

Getting from India to Mongolia seems straightforward, but is a logistical nightmare unless you are preapred to pay for the Delhi-Beijing-UB segment straight the asking price. It is expensive... For Delhi-UB you could try via Hong Kong. Miyat has a direct UB flight from there. Fly on some fly-by-night airline to HK. Another alternative, but utterly more cumbersome is to fly Delhi-Moscow-UB; catch Miyat from Moscow. Might in fact be the cheapest option. Korean Air might be an option, too, via Seoul. The Central Asian republics and their airlines only offer trouble unless you fly to western Mongolia (Olgii) from Almaty in Kazhakstan. An exception might be a combination of Uzbek Airlines from Delhi and Miyat, but still via Moscow.

Trans-Mongolian Express

by iwys

The best way to visit Mongolia is by train. When I left Mongolia, I took the Trans-Mongolian Express to Beijing and back, and then continued by train to London.Make sure you have a long book to read, I took Wilkie Collins' "Woman in White" (900+ pages), as the Gobi desert is fairly repetitive scenery and the forests of Siberia seem to go on forever. One nice thing is that the train gives you enough time to get off and look around each station along the way, including the Great Wall.

Travelling around Mongolia with a Japanese jeep

by titti

In Ulaanbaatar you can find car and driver choosing among different options: Japanese jeep, Russian jeep and Russian minivan. For Japanese jeep + driver we were asked 45 US $ a day (in addition we had to pay driver's food). I can't remember how much is for petrol; I just know that for 2000 km we spent less than 300 US $. Pretty cheap indeed, if you are at least two.If you need to contact a driver (a speking English driver) drop me a line.
