Warning: Erdenebat Boris (Eric) – Mongolia

by davtir40

Be careful from closed a deal, like Car Rental or organized tour, with Erdenebat Boris (Eric) – UB Mongolia. According to my experience (and also my friends) he abrogative preliminary agreement regarding tour conditions. For example: Vehicle not same vehicle booking, Driver not English spiking, extra payment contrary to the agreement and so on. Mr. Erdenebat Boris (Eric) is a faker. I am warning you.

Goverment efficiency.

The closer you get to Mongolia the worse the train accommodations become so to speak...I would defintely recommend paying extra for the First class ticket, but don't expect much. Just a berth that you won't have to share with anyone.....Interestingly enough however, As soon as you cross the border you will notice a higher level of efficiency in all things beauracratic...Noticeably more than in Russia! Military posts are more orderly, people wear their unforms more smartly and have a positive official manner about them. They seem to take their jobs more seriously. This also means that you will have fill out a BUNCH of custom forms and the like. This was a little bit of annoyance, because there were about 6 all together, and more forms doesn't = better goverment...Be friendly to the ladies that work as the hosts on your carriage as they will keep the pick pockets and people they who are...

Wheeling It In A Russian Van

by hayward68

Our transportation for most of the trip was a sturdy Russian minivan. It was very basic and was quite a common transport. We were told that they are easy to fix and this is good as we had a mechanical problem and needed it to be fixed while we spent the night in Tsetserleg. The engine was between the front two seats so, if you're in the front passenger seat, be prepared to move all the crap that you've piled on top of it so the driver get open up the hatch and look into the engine. Yes, this happend to me. There were two bench seats behind, no seatbelts though they would have been useful as you bump and bounce and jolt all over the seats on the rough, practically non-existent roads in the countryside. I brought my travel pillow with me and sat on that for the entire time. Our bags were on the furthest back bench and bounced all over the place as well, I kept hauling mine back up onto the...

Winging it to Mongolia

by hayward68

We flew to Ulaanbaatar from Beijing on Air China and it was an incredibly frustrating experience. We orginally had planned to take the train but a screwup with the booking company meant that the departure day was wrong. We'd already booked our tour so had no other choice but to fly. We were to depart at 9am, checked in at the airport in Beijing, seated at the departure gate and then waited. We were then given a meal and told that there was a delay because of bad weather in Ulaanbaatar, which we didn't really beleive because the MIAT (Mongolian Airlines) flight due to leave at the same time did, in fact, depart. Then then told us the flight would be very delayed and rushed us back through customs, onto a bus and to a hotel where we were given rooms to wait in. They fed us two meals, lunch and dinner and it was during dinner that we were told to head back to the airport. Now during this...

TRASPORTI PUBBLICI & TRENI

by grazy56

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION &TRAIN

by grazy56

BY LAND: public transportation isn't reliable: delayed, canceled? Roads are running-tracks in very bad condition. Vehicules can be rented from private owners for about 20 cents USD/km in town. BUT WRITE ALL DESTINATIONS WITH CYRILLIC LETTERS as nobody will understand you (ask at your hotel), also good for all the taxi running in U,B. For longer stay the price will depend of what kind of deal you can make, the number of personns, the price of gasoline (400/500T. it?s expensive). Often you will find different prices: one for local people, one for Russian (a little more expensive) and one for others (more expensive).Public transportation is almost non-existent. Actually a bus system runs to the major cities but later if you want to visit the area you need a private vehicule and you can have serious difficulties to find one out of U.B?.BUSES: few and always full and not fast at all, don?t...

TRANSPORTS PUBLICS & TRAINS

by grazy56

Info and booking train/tickets Beijing-UB

by Saagar

Check these sites for info:www.seat61.com/TransSiberiantimetable.htmlwww.leridee-reisen.dewww.travelchinaguide.com/china-trainswww.expatsinchina.com/life/transportation/train.htmlThe only Chinese site for online booking that I know of is www.chinatravel.com.train/train.htmlThe online booking price as I saw in Chinatravel is CNY 600 above what I paid for the ticket here in Norway. Don't bet on online stuff being the best deals always. Leaving it it to a local agent is my best advice.I dear not say exactly how many trains and what time they depart for Nadaam, but when i travelled (off-season) there where two through trains per week - the China train and the Russian train; the China train being the best. In addition there are trains that take you to the border towns and to/from Hohot/Datong - UB and these are slow and packed with local traders. Probably fun, but not ideal for getting fast...

Cost of travel Beijing-UB by rail

by Saagar

A train trip 1 De Luxe class including restaurant car vouchers and bedding on the Trans-Mongolian Express Beijing - Ulaan Baatar one way cost me NOK 1.190,- (USD 170) in September 2003, booked, paid in Norway, ticket delivered at the hotel reception in Beijing. This was the most expensive train option, in fact.
