Getting to Mongolia

by andronikkie

Travelling to Mongolia was very safe. Mongolian Airways ( MIAT) have brand new airbuses, flying from Moscow airport straight to Ulaan Baatar. The only thing was that maybe sitting arrangements inside the plane were a little bit crammed. Not much leg space. The airport in Moscow, where you have to wait is very rundown though. You may have to wait there for a few hours. Coffee, water or tea is very expensive and costs 3 Euros each! There is not much to eat either. My husband bought this pack of Twix chocolate bars, and we were in Mongolia and had eaten most of them when we found out they had expired 6 months ago. Luckily nothing happened to us!

Flying out of Western Mongolia to Kazakhstan

by Wanderboy43

There is a weekly flight (Wed afternoon) from (Bayan) Oolgi to Almaty, Kazakhstan. I took this flight in September. The flight actually goes first to Oskemen in Kazakhstan, where you go through customs, before reboarding and going on to Almaty. I went just to Oskemen and the price was $115+T5,000($5) departure tax. All the way to Almaty is $200 + T5,500. The price is cheaper for Mongolians. I bought my ticket the day before; the office is upstairs in the Red Cross building (5 minutes walk from the center square) with a sticker on the door (Air Kazakhstan). The actual airline is SCAT. The guy didn't show up to sell tickets until the afternoon, and then he was the same person taking the tickets at the airport the next day. Customs was no issue. I did have both my Registration and Deregistration stamps from Ulan Bator. Side note: The flight was not full. Also, 2 Finnish guys on the flight...

Train time table Beijing - Ulaan Baatar - Beijing

This is the train table for the late summer 2004. There is talk of changing departure days of trains 4 and 6 from Moscow. Train 23/24 only runs UB-Beijing-UB. The best quality train is no 3/4 the Chinese Trans-Mongolian Express (also called the "China Express"). Always double-check this info!!!!Trains no 3 and 5 - days: Wed, ThuDep. TRAIN TRAVEL

by kiwigal_1

Another common way to get to Mongolia is by train. The Trans Siberian Railway has a train that travels from Moscow to Beijing (via Mongolia) twice a week. I left Mongolia, heading to Russia, this way and had a comfortable (albeit long!) journey. An interesting link:

Petrol

by victorwkf

Petrol is not cheap in Mongolia even though it is a poor country. Perhaps because petrol is not imported in large quantities as there are not many vehicles around. Occasionally, you will see a petrol station along the road but they are very rare once you are outside Ulaanbaatar.

Travel the traditional way by horses

by victorwkf

Mongolia is famous for its horses which is one of the key to the success of the Mongolian Empire hundreds of years ago. Horse riding is a must when you are in Mongolia as this is still the main form of transportation for the people. You can travel from place to place (short distances) by horse, which is very cheap (a few US dollars).

Tough Vehicles

by victorwkf

In this tough and harsh land of Mongolia, tough vehicles are required getting around long distances. These include small buses, 4 wheel drive, jeeps and a type of van which is very popular in Mongolia (see photo).

Travelling around Mongolia

by victorwkf

Mongolia is a very big and insolated place with bumpy roads and hardly any intercity buses (no cities to speak off other than Ulaanbaatar). Therefore it will be best if you arrange for some transportation (e.g. 4 wheel drive, buses) plus tour guide together, as they know the place and conditions very well. It will not be wise to attempt self drive.

Getting to Mongolia

Unfortunately, there are not many flights to Ulaanbaatar, the capital city. Air China has flights from Beijing and Korean Airlines has flights from Seoul. The journey to Mongolia is amazing, especially when flying above the vast Gobi Desert before ariving at the rolling green mountains and landscape of Mongolia.
