Airport tax on Departure

by Saagar

Upon departure from the Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport in Ulan Bataar, you have to pay a departure tax of 12.500 T as you enter the departure hall. Keep ticket, money and passport ready to avoid the otherwise inevitable hassle of unpacking in the queue.

RaR (Roads are Rugged / Roads are Rare)

by Saagar

Roads in Mongolia - or what passes for roads - will get at you one day. You really have to take into account that even if the land is rather level, you cannot even on asphalt roads make more than 400 km per 12-hour day - safely. It will be extremely trying to push this day after day, so probably count on about 200-250 km per day as a relatively comfortable transit travel distance in Mongolia. If you have business inbetween, make it even shorter. Some roads defy both gravity and centrifugal forces, so why road signs are put up is amounting to a tribute to the local drivers.

MIYAT domestic route map

by Saagar

This is the presumed route map of MIYAT's domestic network. Don't expect this to be the current situation (inflight magazine, September 2003). Nor do I think that these flights go too often to the minor towns.

MIYAT route map

by Saagar

The international route map of MIYAT (the Mongolian Airlies) is quite useful in trip planning. This one is from the 2003 inflight magazine.A few other airlines (from Russia, Kazaksthan, Korea, China and Japan) also fly into Mongolia. NB! flights from Kazaksthan only go irregularily to western Mongolia.

Taxi to the airport in UB

by Saagar

With a lot of luggage, and if on the early morning flight to Beijing out of Ulan Bataar, you'll not hesitate but opt for the taxi solution to get to the Buyant-Ukhaa airport. The fare is about equivalent to 5 USD, expensive compared to taking the bus, but fine given the distance. We asked the hotel receptionist to book a taxi for us the evening before and at promptly 5:00 am the taxi showed up. So the local pre-booking system apparently works well. The airport itself is new and hassle-free once past the airport tax counter where there is a bit of congestion. Airport tax is 12500 T. The airport shops include mostly top Mongolian brands clothing (various cashmere, pashmina and camelhair clothing), a bit of local music and some international brands traditional tax-free goods.

Things Take Time

by Saagar

You would think that fairly flat, open Mongolia (and in the mountains, broad valleys) would be vouching for easy travelling? Not so.The guide books are not exaggerating about road conditions. But the guide books may not be able to catch up: roads are being paved, re-paved and constructed, sometimes in that order. But off the key circuit, roads are "off-road roads", tracks that more or less follow the contours of the terrain, circumvent dips and crags, marshy areas etc, causing very slow speed on the steppe - frustrating. You just have to take enough breaks in order to cope! So things will be even slower. Just do not keep a too tight a shedule and bring emergency overnight gear (sleeping bag, blankets, tarp) gear and you'll be fine. The photo shows the main road from Tsetserleg to Kharakhorin, and is not atypical.

Vague road information

by Saagar

We found that the knowledge of roads and their conditions could be rather vague amongst selected travel agents in Ulan Baatar. It was hard to gain firm information, and thus, negotiate itinerary and fares. So, get your information from several sources if you are traveling independently, and seek out people who have been to the area recently.Based on the information that the road we took was partly paved, we came here (see photo)!
