Drinking

by archan4698

Mongolians love to drink Vodka, its about 1 dollar in the countryside for 1 liter. Many men drink until they pass out or get thrown out. Drinking tips:If offered a shot, turn down the first shot. dip your finger in the vodka and tap your finger in the 4 directions of the compass in the air. Then hand it back(right hand only) to the host. Now if your offered again you can take it, supposely to drink as much as you want for that night. <--In Theory :) If you take the first shot, your somewhat expected to finish up the night with them. UB at late night is not very safe, alot of men are looking for fights or more vokda and no one will help you if two big mongols start a fight. Its best to take a cab back to your hotel if you were at a bar till late.

WILD HORSES

by swesn

My impression is that horses in Mongolia are wilder. During our stay at Gachuurt, the kind Mongolians offered to let us ride their horses to cross a river or whatever. However, in one incident, a horse with my friend Pablo on it panicked and galloped away at top speed. Pablo steered the horse to a slow-down and jumped! He managed to get out of this danger but just barely. Another time, a horse also panicked and started jumping on the spot. Tina fell from the horse, her boots caught in the stirrups. She finally fell down on the ground and thankfully, just suffered minor injuries to her face and feet. Unless you are familiar with horses or are on a horse-trek (most likely with tamer horses), be careful when offered a ride on the Mongolian horses. The Mongolians are just being kind and friendly but the horses do not know better.

HEALTH TIPS

by kiwigal_1

If you go to the countryside there could be diseases such as the Black Plague. This occurs when people kill and eat wild marmot. I suggest you do not partake of this meat.If you find yourself in a plague area the place may become quarantined so you wouldn't be able to leave. As a precaution I would be vaccinated against most diseases (such as tetanus, cholera, Hep B, typhoid) and travel with a tour guide who knows the area.Medical facilities in Mongolia are very limited, and some medicines are unavailable. Infectious diseases, such as plague and meningococcal meningitis, are present at various times of the year. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate payment for health services. For information on vaccinations and other health precautions please take a look at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website

VIOLENCE

by kiwigal_1

I have been asked many times if Mongolia is a safe country to travel in and I believe it is. Having said this I would hope that anyone travelling in Mongolia would take similar precautions to those they take in their own country. I would refrain from walking around Ulaan Baatar late at night unaccompanied. In the countryside beware of drunken young men as they can become violent. (I guess this goes without saying but young men do tend to drink a lot of airag and vodka in the countryside!!)

The only danger in Mongolia is usually oneself. Watch where you step or wear boots: I saw some poisonous snakes. Some people are afraid of eating marmot (because of the bubonic plague). I did eat it and I'm still alive...

Be very careful of the water. The plane from Hohhot to Beijing leaves before the restaurant opens and they supply a box breakfast of a ham and lettuce sandwich. I took a single bite before I realized that the lettuce may have been rinsed in water. It was. Luckily I had so little that with an Alka Seltzer and two Pepto-Bismal tablets I was fine in a couple of hours after the queasiness started.
