There are periodic flights from Pokhara to Jomosom that can be booked by a travel agent in Nepal. I’m not sure if you can book internationally though so I’ll leave that up to you.

There are not too many flight options to Manang I’m afraid. However, I met a group of rich Swiss hikers that spent $1,000 to be flown by helicopter from Pokhara to Manang. So if you’re loaded this might be a way to arrive into the region in style.

You would need to research which trek you want to do. Each trek has a different access point. If you are doing the Annapurna Circuit, then you’re best off starting at Basisahar. You can get to there by bus or taxi whether you’re coming from Pokhara or Nepal. Some buses leave in the early morning and drop you just in time for lunch. Therefore, there is usually no need to spend the night here. Just start walking and sleep down the road like we did.

There is a little airfield near Manang in a village called Omre. Two or three times a week a little airplanes comes to take the sick or tired hikers and and local people back to Pakhara.

I’m not sure how expensive it will be, but there are several segments of the trek that can be done by horse. Not all segments can be done by horse though so you should be prepared to walk!!! Horse rental should be arranged with the guesthouse as they will give you the best price.

Horses can come as a life saver if you are stuck up in the Himalayas and need to get back to civilization. By stuck, I mean you have a problem such as broken ankle, broken leg, etc. Contrary to the local believe, I don’t think they should be used by people with altitude sickness that are adamant on going to a higher altitude. Believe me, I saw a dad that hired a horse for her daughter once she started getting altitude sickness. He was just dead stuck on crossing the Thorong La that day as they were pressed on time. Stupid if you ask me. Play it safe and go to a lower elevation instead.
