Kathmandu or Pokhara first...

Favorite thing: Starting in Sanuali, it Makes sense to travel to Kathmandu first then to Pokhara then onto Nainital in India, at least you will be heading west all the time after leaving Kathmandu.

It's easier to go to Chitwan N.P. on the way to Kathmandu or use Kathmandu as a base for a trip to Chitwan N.P. that's what most people do.

Retiring in Nepal-Great Plan!
FrugalTravelsNepal profile photo

Favorite thing: I am an expat that came to Nepal and fell in love with it. It is the ideal place to spend our golden years. The medical issues of old are finished. Now medical doctors are well trained and well equipped. Well, not all of them but I do know some and have experience with a hospital visit. It was fine and I was out of there before I would have even seen a medical doctor in the US emergency room.

So, from what I understand: If you are 60 or older you can apply for a resident visa if you have proof of $20,000 annual income. Then it is only $10 a month and you can do just about anything you want to do, I think.

If you, or anyone else, would like help relocating here I would love to help you get settled. I just love it here. I'm not in business here, just here for my own pleasure.

Typical "Nepal activities" on a budget
Saagar profile photo

Arriving in Nepal, Birgunj.

Favorite thing: Travelling on a budget I would surf the net to get an idea of my options, and realistically mapping my days and places I'd like to visit. Then I would again prioritize upon arrival in Kathmandu when I know the pricing of the chosen activities. Some costs are more or less fixed, like bungee jump, paragliding, mountain flight, flights etc, but all the rest come in fairly cheap varieties. I would drop the paragliding, bungee jumping, mountain flight and domestic air travel as this is nothing unique to Nepal. To travel on the cheap, you go by public bus. To trek on the cheap, you go tea shop trekking, avoiding package solutions and expedition-like treks, and buy your food from lodges and tea stalls en route at a cost you can tolerate. You can do major treks quite cheaply this way, although if you require a couple of beers at the day's end and western fare, it will eat severely into your budget. Elephant safari on the cheap is done out of Sauraha in Chitwan Nat'l Park, but the safari is done in the buffer zone, with pick-ups from local guest houses etc. In this way you pay for the ride/activity, and skimp on the accommodation standard. You still get to see rhinos, deer etc. An all-inclusive lodge which includes trips into the core of the national park are much more costly, but offer improved chances of wildlife sightings.
I have done these things on the cheap as well as on expense account, and both ways work well. You just have to work harder on the spot for gaining the same experience on the cheap. But it will be just as rewarding.
I would have focussed on the trekking part - that's the unique thing about Nepal, plus maybe the Chitwan Nat'l Park, and limited hopping around the country too much. The rest you can probably do cheaper and safer elsewhere.

Mt Everest

Favorite thing: Hi During the mid April, you can directly can go to Syangboche from Kathmandu. Many people do not know and most of the people insist to take the helicopter flight from Kathmandu but is really expensive to charter the flight.
If you are really looking forward to see the Mt Everest closely the best option is just take a regular flight by Tara air to Lukla and they have a connecting flight to Syangboche by Pilatus porter. Tara air base 2 pilatus porter during the main season time in Lukla. But you have to be sure it when you book the ticket in Kathmandu. They only operate if you fly Kathmandu/Lukla by Tara air. Otherwise they do not operate. The fare for Lukla/Syabgboche is abour USD 75.00 for one way.
I also have a tour to Manche bazaar which is doing in a same way.
Itinerary is like this
Day 1 Fly to Lukla. Upon arrive fly to Syangboche by pilatus porter. Upon arrive trek down to Namche Bazaar. 1 hour hiking. Visit Namche village and enjoy the view of himalayan ranges incluing Mt Everest.
Day 2 Climb up to Syangboche air strip. Fly back to Lukla by pilatus porter. Upon arrive in Lukla airport fly back to Kathmandu by regular flight.

If you need any assistance please, do let me know.

Price lists in restaurants
poledi profile photo
poledi 21 reviews

Favorite thing: Maybe it's nothing new for most of you, but two different price lists in restaurants, for foreigners and for Nepali people, are the common practice in Nepal.

What interesting I experienced in KTM was that meals for me and my Nepali friend paid by my friend were much more cheaper than if they were paid by me. That's why my friend insisted to pay for our meals.

reliable guide in Kathmandu

Favorite thing: HI,
I just returned from Nepal two weeks ago. We did the Manaslu 20 days tenttrekking and it was fantastic. We had everything organized by a Nepali guide from Kathmandu, Palsang Tamang, and he was very friendly, helpfull, honest and reliable. I would certainly recommend him. (Palsang Tamang, e-mail: palsangtamang2003@yahoo.com, cellphone: +9779841506950). He will do everything for you: pick you up from the airport, book you a good and cheap hotel, arrange the trekking permits, etc. etc. He also has a group of reliable porters, cooks, etc.
Anyway, you'll certainly have a good vacation!

Steps to the 'Monkey Temple'

Favorite thing: Visas are available on arrival for citizens of most countries, and one passport-sized photograph is required. You can save time by completing the visa application form before arrival. To complete the process, you must pay a fee: 15 day ($25).
You will also complete an arrival/departure form and make sure that you keep your departure card for when you want to leave. Departure tax of Rs 1650 is payable at the Nabil Bank (which is in the departure hall), before you check in.
