7 Corner Garden Restaurant: Good-value lunch

by WaRPer Updated Apr 4, 2011

It’s also 7 Corner Guesthouse up front, but I don’t really recommend staying here for several reasons. But its Garden Restaurant at the back is a nice place for a good-value lunch and dinner. They made really good Tibetan food like Momo and Thukpa (noodle soup.) The restaurant doesn't have many forieners, this is where the locals dine.

Favorite Dish: Buff (?!?) Momo and Chicken Thukpa with chilled Everest Beer!

The Everest Steak House: Delicious Steak Dinner

by IreneMcKay Written Feb 11, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The service was pleasant and friendly. The full steak portions started from about NPR600, but they were huge so I opted for a half portion for NPR300. That was delicious and certainly big enough for me. Steaks come with a variety of different sauces. There are other menu options aside from steak, but I would imagine steak is what they do best.

We had a wonderful lunch sitting in this beautiful garden. The food and service were very good, but I would recommend it most for the lovely garden surroundings. We sat in the sun here without a care in the world. This place also had he cleanest toilet I saw in my entire stay in Nepal.

I had a lovely meal here, but my carnivore husband was not so happy as he had not reaiized it was vegetarian. This threw him greatly on the ordering front. Anyway the decor is interesting and the restaurant is quiet and peaceful with good service. We had momos, cheese balls and Tibetan soup.

We went here several times during our stay. There were some tourists here but mainly locals. The service was very efficient and friendly. Food was excellent and very cheap. They served local Nepali food, Indian, Chinese and Western food. Beer was a very cheap NPR199 a big bottle. Every meal we had here was very good and I would thoroughly recommend it.

  • Weizen bakery and Pumpernickel Bakery: Bakery and Breakfast in Thamel

by AlisonMac Written Jan 11, 2011

Amazing way to start the day, especially if you have some major trekking ahead. Fantastic, relaxed atmosphere, great fresh food and great service.
Weizen also has free Wi Fi access.

Favorite Dish: Pumpernickel has the best cinnamon & honey wholemeal porridge for breakfast. They also have a huge selection of fresh baked breads and rolls, as well as fresh dairy such as yak and goats cheese/yoghurts.
Weizen - be there for 7.30am and get the Apple Struedel fresh from the oven. Best and biggest Apple streudel I have ever eaten and all for R50.00 !!!

  • Himalyi Kitchen and Tharkali Restaurant: Local eating is Best

by AlisonMac Written Jan 11, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Traditional Nepalese Food at reasonable prices.
These restaurants may look basic, but the food and value for money is second to none.

They are usually busy lunch time and evenings which is a good sign.

Favorite Dish: Recommend the Nepali Set or Dal Bhat meals - great value as they keep topping up your plate until you can eat no more. Available as veg or non-veg, with rice, roti or flour meal porridge.
A must are the beautiful, fresh, steamed vegetable mo mos.

Tajmahal Restaurant:(nee Shree Lal Veg- Rest): Value For money

by goutammitra Updated Jun 11, 2010

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Addendum( 2010 May): This hotel is one perfect example of bad state of affair in Nepal and lost tourism. As I learnt from Mr.Das that he had to change the name and style of the restaurant because of Maoist threats. He started the place as Vegetarian but had been subject to continuous closure and extortion. He changed the concept to now Non-Vegetarian Indian restaurant, with less no of staff and customer as in the last two years the no of tourists has reduced in Kathmandu because of political unrest. The food still remains very good if it is cooked by Mr.Das himself. I had one night meal there.

(2007 Sept) It was Saturday, when we landed in Kathmandu. We take only Vegetarian food on Saturday. I was looking for a decent place and asked the T Shirt maker( see shopping tip) for a place, who in turn guided me to Shree Lal. To our surprise we found that the owner Mr.Ritwik Das is a Bengali gentleman from Kolkata, married to a Nepali lady Mrs. Shanti Maharjan, has opened this beautiful place after a lot of struggle in life. Mr. Das told me the story of coming to Kathmandu and getting married to Mrs.Shanti. She is a graceful lady and an extremely able partner to Mr.Das. The restaurant is brand new, food is cooked in front of you, clean and all the crew welcome with a smile. You just cant go back unsatisfied. The food is very good and healthy. They also have a Bar for the customers. We had the opportunity to meet Mrs.Shanti and their son Wrishant. The Restaurant is also assisted by Mr.Ritwik's brother Satwik. Opon meeting Mr.Das we immediately became friendly and not only this, on learning that we are paying very high amount for our stay, he offered to help us to get a very good hotel at very resonable price( Hotel Dharma Inn at Pokhara) at Pokhara. He wrote a letter to his friend Mr.Chabbi, who gave us almost 50% discount. Mr. Das is an excellent man so is his wife Shanti.

Favorite Dish: During our stay in Kathmandu, we tasted their Vegetarian food on several occasions and all the time the meal was excellent. We had mostly Indian food of Dal, Roti, Naan, Vegetables, cottage cheese etc.

They also serve Vegetarian dishes made in European, Italian and English style. Please give it a try while in Kathmandu, you will not be disappointed.

They make pure vegetarian food and dont use even Eggs!!

Ritwik Das, Shanti & Wrishant at the Restaurant. We with Ritwik and Shanti. We are tasting Vegetarian's delight. Indian Vegetarian food. New Look Tajmahal Restaurant now Non-Vegetarian

Organic Cafe at Thamel: Genuine Organic Vegetarian Food

by goutammitra Updated May 22, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Our VT friend Bashu Thapaliya introduced me to this place. Bashu is a vegetarian and I am vegetarian on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Bashu took me for dinner to this wonderful place. We had starters, set Nepali Thali, which had green vegetables, lentil soup, Paneer, curd and Kheer.
The starter had Organic potato fried, groundnut fried and salad. It was excellent.

All the vegetables, rice milk are all grown by the Organic farmers of the Eastern Nepal and hence it is costly to produce and costly to eat also. But once in a while this is okay. Now there are many people who insist having only Organic food, this place is really heaven for them. They also burn a candle on the table to make it memorable dinner. Drinks are also available.

They also sell organic fruits and vegetables ( See picture )

    Kumari Chhen: Temple Courtyard

by illumina Updated Apr 19, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Not to be confused with the Kumari Restaurant, despite being also on Freak Street, this lovely little restaurant is contained within a Newari house - you pass through a low doorway, and cross a lovely little courtyard containing a small shrine; the restaurant is within the ground-floor rooms on the far side. They serve good value traveller fare, and local stuff too. We took a friend here, and shared a superb curry. It was quite a bit cheaper than he was used to, and I think he was surprised at the quality.

Shiva Krishna Cafe: Eat with the locals

by illumina Written Apr 19, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant a little further down Freak Street, on the corner of the road to the Bhimsen Tower, isn't often frequented by tourists I don't think. It was an entirely local crowd until we entered anyway! We had a really good paneer (similar to cottage cheese only harder) chow mein, which with a cup of tea was only 60NPR each. They had some fabulous desserts on display as well!
