    Chameleon Diner: "A Kool Kitchen"

by illumina Updated Apr 19, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Again situated on Freak street, this lovely restaurant is upstairs in a gorgeous Newari house, which is really atmostpheric, and has a lovely view through the carved windows. My partner's momo sizzler looked great, and I ate water buffalo meat for the first time! The tag line, 'A Kool Kitchen', is their own!

Mountain cafe: Good place for breakfast

by illumina Written Apr 19, 2010

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Just opposite the Annapurna Lodge, this little restaurant has seating outside in a shady courtyard where you can watch the world go past up and down Freak Street. We came here for breakfast two mornings in a row - pretty good value.

    Kumari Restaurant: Traveller favourite

by illumina Updated Apr 19, 2010

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant on Freak street does a combination of local Nepali fare and traveller orientated western food, and it's very good value. We ate here twice - the cheese pakauda are very good for a light lunch, and they do good breakfasts too. A really nice relaxed place to eat.

    Big Bell: Durbar Square fare

by illumina Updated Apr 19, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Situated right in the heart of old Kathmandu on Durbar Square, this cosy little restaurant has good food for decent prices, and the ambiance is great. Despite being in such a touristy area, it feels local. They serve Thupka, a Tibetan noodle soup, which is very good. When we were there it was Shivaratri, the power was out, and we ate by candlelight, looking out at the silhouettes of the temples against the starry sky.

Diyalo Restaurant: Mexican Breakfast in Nepal?!

by illumina Written Apr 19, 2010

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Diyalo restaurant is with the Annapurna Lodge hotel, and is on the ground floor, including a nice little garden courtyard area ,which is a lovely place to sit and have breakfast. They have a fairly wide range of food, especially for breakfast, when you can choose from American, British, Continental or Mexican (some spicy fried potatoes make it Mexican I think!). Decent value and large portions.

La Dolche Vita: Italian escape - La Dolche Vita

by Saagar Written Mar 11, 2010

An Italian escape in the centre of Thamel - a wonderful place to enjoy a concluding day of my visit in Nepal if I am on my own or with foreign visitors. A short walk from everything central, it is located across froim the gate of Kathmandu Guest House. Up a narrow staircase, two floors to choose among including outdoor terrace.

the menu is good, the food is good, the waiters sometimes going a little overboard explaining about the food and the ways things should be in Italy and Kathmandu.

The problem with the place is the neigbouring German beer house with loud live music into the evening across the street. At worst it is difficult to speak at the window tables at Dolce Vita. Many people visiting Thamel have wished that German place an early death, but so far without being heard by the various gods.

Favorite Dish: They make a good La Dolce Vita special chicken pasta. Good! And a good Chianti with this, and the evening is complete!

Yak and Yeti Hotel's restaurant: Even if you don't stay here

by ozalp Written Aug 19, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We had breakfast or lunch in our hotel several times. The restaurant of this hotel is quite good. I tasted soups, grilled meats, vegetables, salads of this restaurant. Almost everything was delicious but soups were not my favorite. Grilled meat was quite good. They cook the meat you picked or the pasta and its sauce you wanted instantly during lunch time. They had a Oktoberfest theme but I couldn’t taste the beers since we were always in a hurry.

Favorite Dish: Grilled meat, salads, fruits...
    Their buffet lunch was great!

Everest steak house.: Great for meat lovers!

by halfbeat Written Dec 9, 2008

Great place for a post trek or adventure steak!
Prices are pretty good, the steaks were about 300 - 400r each on average, with some of the specials being a bit more. Meat quality was excellent! Chips were good! Large portions!
They do have other dishes aswell, plus some vegetarian food, but it is mainly catering for us meat lovers out there!

Favorite Dish: Just the steak in general. Excellent quality and cooked just as you ask for it!

    Nice piece of steak!

Helena's Rooftop Restaurant: Best rooftop view in the city

by mrotsmit Written Jul 16, 2008

Huge, multi-story place with great rooftop views of Kathmandu. You will receive a friendly greeting from the cooks as you head upstairs.

Favorite Dish: I had a steak, (we guess it was water buffalo) which was amazing! It was so good, in fact, that it kept us coming back for more.

Kaiser Café: In the Garden of Dreams

by Saagar Updated Apr 29, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fantastic location in the newly opened Garden of Dreams, a renovated, fantastic palace garden of the former aristocracy of Nepal. In itself, well worth a visit.
Therer are four places to get fed in side here, all run by Dwarika, the stylish hotel. There is a main restaurant with various function rooms and sort of regular seating upstairs in the right corner as you enter the gardens, the tea salon, which also serves from the same menu, a rather stylish and cozy bar to the far left in the gardens and a fresh outdoor seating under a pergola. All very nice and food is good, too. Business minded? They have wireless internet connection. Wheelchair access, ask at the main gate. Entrance fee at the gate for all visitors - NPR 160,-, well worth the money.

Favorite Dish: The menu has a big selection of international food, and everything from simple soups to advanced cooking. Also a very fair price range. So far I only had drinks and some snacks in here, all very good, but I am returning at first opportunity. Open for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. A very good place to meet and talk.

The Himalayan Restaurant: Himalayan food, not plains food:

by Saagar Updated Apr 29, 2008

NB! I VISITED AGAIN IN APRIL 2008 AND THE PLACE WAS CLOSED DUE TO THE LONG-TIME DOWNTURN IN TOURISM VISITS. THE CONCEPT WAS REALLY GOOD AND THE FOOD, TOO, SO I AM WATCHING THE LOCATION IN CASE IT SPRINGS UP AGAIN. STAY POSTED!

Modest location on Durbar Marg, into a court yard, up two flights of stairs, sort of - a bit difficult to find.
This is one of the few places in Kathmandu where you can get excellent Himalayan food, in the sense of mountain food - beyond the daal bhat. And cheaply.
There are 4 main rooms and a rooftop seating option. One room is a small closed-party type of room where you sit on the floor and there is a white wall whioch can be used for meetins, with power point projectors, slides, OH etc. - excellent for small meeting groups of NGOs or businesses. Another rood has table and chairs seating for about 20, but I feelt it is a bit dark and claustro. The bar room in mountain and monastery interior design and seating on the floor is very good and my preferred get-together place for a group.
The manu has various real-Himalayan food items, such as dhindo and various dried meats, mountain spice mixes and good curries.

Favorite Dish: Momos are good, likewise sukuthis and dhindo.

Delima Garden Cafe and Restaurant: Garden Restaurant

by WaRPer Written Apr 24, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Really nice, relax garden restaurant with variety of seating areas to choose from. From indoor sofa seats, rooftop tables and ones under small trees in the middle of the court. The restaurant is very famous for its breakfast, as many foreigners come in and out discussing their “plan of the day”, or hanging for hours reading books. The BF ranges from 65-200 Rupees. Lunch is served after exact 12 p.m.

Favorite Dish: I had a "Steak Breakfast"; 2 slices of toast with butter/marmalade, 2 eggs (any style), a small lumb of meat (buff meat I guess!), stir-fried potatoes and a huge cup of tea or coffee.

Aroma Restaurant: Where locals (and some tourists) dine!

by WaRPer Written Apr 24, 2008

Located on the rooftop of a small building just off the corner from the huge intersection, Jamal, overlooking the queen's pond. The restaurant offers great-taste meals at decent price. They serve Nepali, Indian, Tibetan, and Chinese food, with a wide variety to choose from. The view from there is good for traffic-watching, I mean if you can handle all that honks!!

Favorite Dish: I had mushroom roup and a HUGE chicken fried-rice as my main dish.
