Buy Tea? by SumTingWong Thamel street and the Thamel backpacker area of Kathmandu will offer you great deals on just about everything. Thamel supplies everything from cheap, decent quality packs, sleeping bags, etc.. to mandalas, signing bowls, pashmina, carpets, clothing, prayer flags and wheels, bags, and everything else made in Nepal. Prices are low due to sheer competition between the numerous merchants. However, beware of beggars, pickpockets, and weird people offering advice of hashish, do not even make eye contact with beggars and street venders unless you want to buy their product.
Good deals on wooden carvings, mandalas, pashmina, custom clothing, t-shirts, Tibetan stuffs, khukuri knives, etc... For pottery head to Bhaktapur, and for metalwork head to Patan. IMPORTANT PRICE LIST TO KNOW: - If you are in Nepal during the off-season (June-August), venders are desperate for a sell and will go much farther down in price. NEPALI PRICE VS TOURIST PRICE... SHOOT FOR CLOSER TO THE NEPALI PRICE (which you wont get) - Kukhuri - 180NRS vs 600NRS - Pashmina - 1000NRS vs 1600NRS - T-Shirts - 120NRS vs 300NRS - Custom T-shirts (embroidered) - 175NRS vs 350 NRS - Signing Bowls - 160NRS vs 450 NRS NOTE ABOUT BUDDHA STATUES AND TIBETAN RELICS If you buy a large (over 20 mm is height) you need a stamped certificate of purchase or you won't be able to get through customs (I didn't know before hand, so although it took 20 minutes they let me go only because I had a government certificate of volunteer work).
depends on object, but from what they start at, only expect to go down 25%, it isn't Mexico, the venders figure that you know most to the costs. Leave a Comment Theme: HobbiesAddress: Thamel Street, KTM

Photo from Nagarkot by SumTingWong Thankas are intricate Tibetan paintings made from thin hair paintbrushes. Their original use is for meditation, but now a’ days they have become very popular pieces d'art. Remember to go for quality and detail, don't fall for the rip-offs. There are special Thanka schools in Kathmandu and the best one is in Bhaktapur (highly recommended, or at least take the tour from the principle). There you will get the best quality for the best prices.
Prices differ depending of size, quality, and framing (some are stitched where as some are just painted). The cheapest good-quality one you can get would be for about US$15. Medium to Small US$25, medium US$50, Medium-larger US$75, and large ones can go anywhere from US$90 to US$2000. Buddhist Monastery, Nepal by butterfly_girl This is not a shop, but a CD called "Tibetan Incarnations" that you will hear over and over again while you are in Nepal.
It is the most beautiful CD of monks chanting. I heard this CD constantly at the Boudhanath stupa, in Pokhara and all over Bhaktapur. I am so happy that I bought a copy and brought it home with me. Everytime I put it on I am momentarily transported to mystical Nepal. You will find it for sale all over Nepal.

mr buddha lama with his beautiful thankas.. by eelaine thanka is the tibetan buddist painting used for meditation.. this can be seen everywhere in nepal especially in the more touristy places.. the more commonly found paintings are the mandala, the wheel of life and the life of buddha..
basically, what you buy and how much depends on how much you think the paintings are worth.. we bought a thanka from this little shop in pokhara, owned by a really friendly and mild mannered artist named buddha lama.. we found his paintings to be very fine and detailed compared to most that we've seen..
we paid npr5100 for a large painting of the mandala with a very nice traditional cloth frame.. Leave a Comment Theme: ArtAddress: lakeside, baidam-6, pokhara..Directions: it's in lakeside.. in front of the royal palace..Other Contact: mandalaart33@yahoo.co.in
