general advice: Shoping in the International Airport in KTM

by poledi

Gifts, food, drinks and newspapers are very expensive on the KTM International Airport, the choice is really poor and it's worth to buy and take as much as possible you need for your int'l flight back home.

Mount Annapurna Trekking Equipment Shop: Trekking Equipment Shop in Pokhara

by poledi

Good, professional customer service. Polite and very nice owner, who was interested not only in selling some stuff but in my trekking plans in Nepal. He did not try to force me to buy the most expensive equipment but advised me according to my needs, trekking experience and an amount of money I could spend. Everything you need for trekking and stuff you did not think can be essential/important in the mountains.

Any kukri shop: Buy a kukri

by ozalp

I usually read a lot about the places before travel. I learned kukris by reading, but I don’t remember my source. It is designed as weapon but also can be used in kitchen. The most important thing that kukri is so beautiful. I thought if I find a kukri, it can be a great gift to my brother. On our last day in Kathmandu, I found some kukri shops in Thamel. There were a few men bargaining for lots of kukris. Their presence made me so unimportant for the vendor but I managed to buy a small, decorated kukri for 350 rupee.I didn't remember where I bought my little one but this store could be it. Kukri $5-$100

A thanka to tempt anyone

by srinpav

There are many markets/shops in Kathmandu and Pokhara that sell beautiful thanka paintings. These paintings are done by tibetan refugees and are so intricate, colourful and impressive. They range in different styles, sizes, and qualities. They can take from as little a couple of days up to year to paint and can be the only source of income for many of the refugees. They are a spectacular piece of art to have on your wall or a gift that cannot be surpassed. I bought a thanka in pokhara for $38 austalian dollars which is about 40cmx60cm and is probably one of my most treasured possessions(and i'm a massive whorder). The man who painted it said it took him almost 3 weeks and it is stunning. I was very happy with the price I paid and the man who sold it to me was obviously overjoyed by making the sale. Everybody wins. For a thanka you could spend anything from $5 for a small, quickly...

Internet Access in Pokhara

by into-thin-air

In Pokhara – if you have a lot of interneting to do then the prices in Pokhara Bazaar are less that ½ of what they are in Lakeside. So as long as you have time, catch the little bus that regularly runs between Lakeside and the centre of Pokhara Bazaar and pop into one of the many outlets there.

Internet access during load shedding

by into-thin-air

Currently there is around 16 hours a day of load shedding and this makes internet access a Right Pain – there are a few internet outlets in Kathmandu that have their own generators, I know there is one on the cross street opposite Hot Breads / Le Bistro, they tend to be a bit more expensive than the normal internet outlets but at least you can communicate with everyone and it still works out at well less that a $ per hour !!
